Jon, I don't mean to be a $#@&* but...

Can't quite go with this one. Over mountains, at night in clouds I fly high with a GPS showing all available airports, roads and terrain elevations. I have a 10-20 mile glide range depending on the altitude and communication with ATC to summon help. I have a fighting chance. Three feet over rocks we lack all of this.

Does this mean formation flying is also crazy?

His energy state was such that with an engine failure he could have easily alighted on the water.

I am just saying that even though you don't recognize it you live in a glass house and should be more hesitant about throwing rocks.

I think the A5 looks like an agile little toy, but fun to fly, if you remain 500 feet away from people and objects.

Yeppers - Seawind 300C, that has the performance and is not to hard on the eyes.

I never really looked into any amphib capable aircraft before, but that one is interesting.

See the power of the ICON A-5, I am now looking at a whole new market segment.

If I remember right the pilot (CEO) was a fighter jock. He's probably fairly comfortable flying like that and I'm sure had some viable escape plan if something happened. I hope

really? so if you have a bonanza I assume you fly everywhere 3ft off the ground doing 170kt, right? I mean why not, it's not dangerous at all since you're carrying so much energy.

What if there was a downdraft, a bump, whatever. If he clipped that wing, what would have happened? As someone else said, at night you have time to glide and think about your best alternative... you don't have that opportunity when you're 3ft off the ground and you clip something.

Wow, stop the car Dude...

Sounds good to me, and I certainly was not throwing rocks. :duck:

I guess I took your statement more seriously then you meant it. I didn't realize you were speaking tongue-in-cheek when you said.

I took that personally!!! I thought you were throwing rocks! Yes, I fly at night over mountains in clouds...

Oh the joys of trying to communicate.

No problem, sometimes nuance is difficult to communicate on a message board.

Interesting what you say about a downdraft etc.

There is another thread here where a member has posted videos of his short field landings in a very low energy state. A sudden downdraft or change in windspeed/direction would be disastrous for him yet you have not jumped on his case.

But I digress, I don't think there was anything more risky in what the icon pilot was doing than I have seen elsewhere in BeechtalkLand.

Then it would be a Lake and it would cost $500K or a Seawind and it would be vaporware. Not that it isn't vaporware already....

Great! A Bonanza I can land on water for $500K. Where do I sign up?

BTW, that Lake is FUGLY. Do not want. Icon looks pretty good.

It's a jet ski with wings.

If they're going to take the time to create something like this, why do they make it so tiny and unusable for anything but screwing around? Does it cost so much more to create a legitimate cross country version?

I love the idea but what are you really going to do with it?

Yes...its couple of million...
