Tim, this way we keep the thread going. Once Jim chimes in all questions will be answered and there will be no reason for debate. :D

Avemco sells liability only on the a700 for $600 per year. Thats less than half a tank of fuel.
I've used it the last two years as liability insurance is required at my airport, smx, the same field Ted Smith built her at.

My insurance rep quoted:
$5,300 for Baron NA
$5,800 for P Baron
$19k for Aerostar

My Aerostar search ended immediately following the phone call.

I'm not new to the airplane, and have a fair amount of time, but I'm paying less than any of those quotes for full coverage on a 601P. You need a different broker.

Sorry, but thats why I don't post much if ever, the bs level here is out of sight. Im flying two aerostars and these machines are amazing, cheap, easy to fly by the book, economical especially if you're an a&p, but full coverage insurance on anything imo is at least 1%to 4% of hull value, planes, yachts, houses....doesn't matter, talk to an actuary if you don't believe me

Of course, if you insure a $500k aerostar for full coverage, $19k sounds right, thats 4% roughly...3.8% exactly...im sticking with my $600 year plan. Im betting on myself.

What newbies don't understand is that an aerostar can do things that no other piston twin in the history of the world can do (credits to my friend Steve L. Of beechtalk For pointing that out to me.).
Its been 50 years SINCE her type certificate, but what plane can do either 190 knots at 28gph or 280 knots at 50gph (jack brush world record holder)? See a big tailwind? Climb easily up to fl250 and enjoy 345 knots groundspeed in pressurized, heated comfort...ive done it many times.......all for less than, in my case, the cost of a new chevy suburban. I'm flying both a 601p and a 700p. I challenge any other piston twin to a race for pink slips...thats how much better the aerostar is than any other piston twin. California to Dallas non stop? I do it all the time. Its a simple, bullet proof airframe over engineered to be a jet transport coupled with the legendary lycoming 540...whats there not to love? You can trust your life to her engineering, strength and build. She's a complete %#$@# cat oei, been there done that, lived to tell about it. My friend just dropped his off for a factory refresh at the factory in Idaho, and I noticed, it wasn't very costly. I think the factory labor rate is $75/hast I checked. Try getting a plumber to unclog your toilet for less then that, you wont.

You won't find many Aerostar's that will give you 280 KTAS unless you are in a decent. It seems like the maximum book speed for any of them is around 262 KTAS.

That still puts many King Air 90's to shame....

I didn't know the Chevy Suburban went up in price that much.

not less than $600 for me, but well less than $6000. I am bit over 2% of hull value for full coverage, and its roughly the same as we pay for the same coverage and similar hull value on the Cirrus. No low time pilots on either airplane, no claims

John, that was a one off speed run in an airplane that was, frankly, littered with uncertified mods.

Aerostars do not under any circumstances do 280ktas. Let's be real.

Maybe John was trying to point out the BS level that's out of sight.

So just to summarize....

Aerostar's are the same age as the rest of the GA p-twin fleet...and for some reason that's important.
Aerostar's will cruise at Mach 0.42 on 25 gallons per side.
Aerostar's are $60k for a decent one.
Aerostars are 1200nm airplanes with IFR reserves.
Aerostar's have bulletproof engines. Except when they don't; in which case they're easy to fly on one engine.
Aerostar's are so good that the most economical way to own one is the drop your plane and your checkbook at the factory.

Well HOT DAMN that's one magical airplane!

Pfffft...that's easy for you to say. Your airplane barely worth the price of a Suburban.
