Certainly rock stars would choose the tighter pants and faster aircraft. Country folk more likely to go with slower and bigger aircraft and who knows...no pants!

My normal cruise was over 20 knots faster in the low 20s compared to the RAM upgraded stats at 65% power compared to the 75% power on the 421C. And if I climbed all the way to 25-27K I could easily hit 245 KTAS without trying to hard. Then when you add climb performance and descent? Every plane is a trade off, rarely do you find a plane which sucks at everything. However, in this case, Cessna went for cabin comfort in the 421, while the Ted Smith Aerostar went for speed. Not saying one is better, I just know which one I prefer to fly, and which one I prefer when stuck in the back. Tim
Tim- The Aerostar is not significantly faster ( TAS ), while the Aerostar may arrive 10 min before me the 2 planes are vastly different in comfort with a stand up cabin and potty. IMO- 300kts is a difference but at a price..
Thread drift 340-414-421 ( Aerostar )

Mike
Stand up cabin or cabin class is a term recognized for classification for the cabin size and mobility. I stand up along with kids but hunched over unlike a baron where your crawling or moving around on your butt.. Cabin class on a 421 would be similar to a king air, premier jet , Cj . On a 4 hour leg the pax are able to stand up rather than sit at takeoff and stay seated till landing.. While speed is not vastly different the difference maker is comfort during the trip Hope this helps your understanding.

Username Protected wrote: I stand up along with kids but hunched over Sorry, that ain't a "stand up cabin", at least not how the industry defines it. You have to get into midsize or larger jets before you get what they call "stand up cabin" (generally heights around 6 ft or more). Maybe we can call that a "stand hunched over cabin" as opposed to a "crawl cabin". Mike C.

Mike
I guess common sense people get the idea as we discuss and debate GA planes...

A Cessna 421 is far from a stand up cabin at 4' 3" except for maybe a 12 year old. The Premier is almost there at 5' 4". Big difference and the incorrect use of the term in the industry. Nobody calls a 4+change cabin "stand up".
While seated, there is no doubt that the 421 has a comfortable cabin, but you can't walk down the center isle.

Mike C. How about walk through vs crawl through. I'm an inch or two shy of 6 ft but have had no problem "walking" through the cabin of a 340, 421, or Navajo. But I wouldn't consider any one of those to be a "stand up" cabin.

Would you rather make a three hour trip in pants that fit and a 200kt plane or a 2:40 trip in a plane that is 10% faster wearing pants 10% smaller Since I lost weight, I will take the 10% smaller pants. Who knows, it might give me an incentive to lose some more! Tim

Lance - Our family walks up and down the isle and at 6'3 I walk down the isle ( hunched over ). When I had the Baron the entry to the cockpit for me was crawling and the pax crawled around also, so even though we are hunched walking around the ability to be mobile is great and makes a difference on those long trips. My experience flying 15+ business jets is they are all " hunched" over stand up cabins and have limited mobility like the 421 and 414, with exception to the Global Express- I could walk around standing up with the cabin very large... The Premier Jet along with other small/mid jets are a hunched over cabin. Prob. " stand up " is the wrong term but we walk on our feet and crawl on our knees..

Easy way to settle the debate. Do you have to sit or can you stand while you pee?
