Went to FL410 getting over knastE line around Birmingham yesterday coming back to Charlotte from Arkansas. Before departure I was thinking only about 40% chance of getting over it so I got more fuel to let me go another 200 miles south to cut through a lower gap. When loading fuel I was thinking this extra weight might make it hard to get to FL410. I knew it was a trade off getting extra fuel but I try hard to not break my rule of: If I am concerned about weather I have plenty of fuel so I don’t have to look at fuel gauge. ISA +6 at FL370 with me around 11,500 so built a little speed for 5 minutes at FL370 then FL390. Temps were forecast cooler at 39 and 41. Controller said route was calming down and I should get through but I was barely still VMC at 39 with temps ~ negative two from memory. Requested FL400 then 41K 500fpm no problem. After getting there I saw temps at one point of -10 only to see -1 a couple min later. Speeds from 330 back to 295 and back to 330 with altitude loss of +/-40 feet. More of a rolling ride than bumpy and still VMC in the upper thin tops of stratus clouds. I could always see blue above me. After the turn crossing Atlanta and with 90 knot push I was seeing .86 NMP Lesson learned on cold carbon brakes. I got an almost unheard of late descent into my Charlotte area airport so ~2000 fpm most of the way down. On landing after beta for a bit I barely got on brakes to turn off and almost no brakes. I added a little power and rolled down the next 1,000 feet. Something to consider on shorter runway after late descent with cold brakes. Sim next week…..yeebahabba Yeebahabba

.86 nmp (nautical miles per pound) is a bit over 5.7 nm/gallon.
BTW, I was in Staniel Cay Bahamas last year talking to a crew member of ~160 foot yacht who was filling her up and kept filler her up for a while. He said 20 gnm….as in 20 gallons per nautical mile….yikes. I had two thoughts.
When owner gets on their yacht they are kinda all ready at the destination.
Wealthy people NEED to spend their money. So how high to you need to go to consistently get 4 hours of flight time?

To my eyes they are in the top 5 cool looking planes ever made.
Its a good thing i am not a billionaire, because i would probably build a giant hangar, have my own paved 6,000 foot airstrip, and the oddest collection of planes, including a Piaggio P180.

But I was talking about the outside on first glance, how it seems about the size of a PC-12 and just like the PC-12 seems larger in life than in photos. Admittedly I've only seen a PC-12 from the outside. One of the most interesting things the Piaggio pilot told me is that they had looked at a PC-12, but due to various regulations in this part of the world they would have had to fly certain routes close to airports in case the PC-12 lost its engine. With the Piaggio they can fly much more direct routes. So much so that they found the costs per trip would be cheaper with the Piaggio (as well as much faster of course). Now the owner wants to "upgrade" to a Premier 1A. I'm not sure that's really an upgrade. The pilot said the same thing to the owner. Might gain 20-30kts speed, but lose in all other areas.

Agreed, SR71 Blackbird P51 Mustang Avanti Beech 18 Strearman Anthony and I just finished up a great Flight Safety recurrent session this week. Engine failures, engine fires, electrical failures, high/hot engine failure, pressurization issues, ice that we never out climbed with icing malfunctions finishing up with mach tuck issues I think it was Thursday morning on the drive in I said to Anthony, "So, Do you still look at airplanes on Controller?" Anthony smiled and replied, "What for?" We both laughed. Our newest Avanti/owner pilot friend Rague will be in sim next week. Good luck Rague! Still grinning

Still grinning He's my neighbor at home base, KEMT! I'm always dipping in to his hangar to admire the bird and chat Piaggios. Here is Raghu coming in hot: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CnZIxlrIP-A/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
