Actually, its pretty common in the Aerostar... I see 300 knots across the ground all the time downwind.

Back in the late winter, I had 350 across the ground KGRR-KBED, and seen 378 on the descent...

Don Smith told me many years ago he was eastbound in the jetstream one winter night and center flat wouldn't believe he was piston powered.

Unlike something burning Jet-A an aerostar going west is just fine at 1500 ft AGL to dodge the wind....

This is one of the things folks might not really understand the value of until you have to do it... I’ve gone from the east coast to the Midwest several times at 4000 ft the whole way because the flight plan times & fuel burn were better there. In my turboprop I don’t have much a choice but just eat it. Aerostar is a very versatile machine.

Dropped off at Masters Aviation in Danbury yesterday am for annual. Departed Charlotte at 5:18 am. Watching the sun rise at FL210 and 235 KTAS.....I will never get tired or bored with these numbers

I think she is 2 knots faster with new paint job.

Because Aerostars are a PITA to find a hangar for?


lmao, so true. But the real reason was after two years I never got used to the fuel usage combined with a mission change. I no longer need that capability.

I suspect you had a 600P or 700, 'cause the 600A is actually a very fuel efficient twin that can be operated on as little as 23 gals/h and still managing 190k TAS !

My 702 at 27” and LOP burning 24gph will fly around 170TAS at 10,000 feet and should be around 200 knots at FL200.

I guess I need to prove my numbers soon but I like :) while flying up high and :D takes more fuel

I never had an engine monitor (changed airplanes before I could get one installed), so my ops had extra fuel margin in them, therefore I never did LOP - but I understand that you can do that at 45% power in a 700. I used 45% power (25" / 2000 rpm) regularly ROP and got 205 ktas in the low 20's burning about 28-29 gph. 2000 rpm was ultra quiet too. You can make crazy range with that power setting and the aux tank full.
