How much trouble is it changing back? Did you use a service to do this or did you do it yourself?

Vince

Haven't done this yet, won't do it until closing, but it is my understanding that this is a pretty straightforward process for aircraft which have FAA type certificates and haven't had any non-FAA approved modifications. This will require an inspection and then a bit of time for paperwork and a bit of paint. I don't expect any issues as the plane I'm dealing with was on the N-reg for most of its life before being moved to the C-reg and has major maintenance and upgrades done by top US shops, even after being exported. We shall see How it goes...

Well, I would not just take it for granted.

I have personally transferred over a half dozen planes from foreign reg to FAA and whilst it generally goes without a hitch, there is always the risk that something does not pass the DAR's scrutiny.

I would start contacting DARs now and get a general feeling for what they want to see.

Patrick, is it the commander that was based in Winnipeg for a while by chance?

Erwin, I don't think so...
It was based recently mostly at Vancouver International. I understand there are a good number in Canada, many in forestry related work. The one I'm acquiring was owned by a private owner/pilot, used for personal transport, so was more gently used than some of the other Canadian Turbo Commanders. I will have a look at the flight logs to see if there was time in Winnepeg.

Thanks, not taking it for granted, this is going on. I'm doing as the prebuy, an FAA annual/150 hour in a US shop which is one of the main Commander specialists, which has done this before and have a DAR they have worked with on these importations before.

She's a beaut! Looks like the gear was O/H and painted recently in that pic.

Just a tip - check for corrosion under the dorsal fin fillet on the A and B models. Water can get trapped there. There's a fix from Twin Commander LLC should that be the case.

Another thing is you can add black neoprene on the inner wings (so it looks like de-ice boot). This protects the leading edge from the fuel hose that inevitably will be rubbing against the wing in that area. Not by any means necessary if you're a careful refueler, but it can add a little bit of cheap protection.

Thought I'd be done by now and flying off my required mentor pilot time, alas not yet. Delays due to the shop needing more time to inspect a potential squawk uncovered during the annual/prebuy and very limited working days over the holidays. Had to fly United across the US for Xmas visit to Virginia, to a destination ~5 minutes down the road from Manassas airport. I keep driving past the sign for the municipal airport every time I do anything, it's like a big tease...
At least I'm getting plenty of opportunity to consider my decision to make this big leap.
Edit: I'm pretty sure I'm a bit crazy to make this step but that is ok...

Isn't it always the case? Never had a plane that got maintenance done on time so far… :bang: :hammer: :pullhair:

I hope it's not some deal breaker or expensive stuff.

Yes, it's like there is an alternative universe where time moves backwards or very occasionally forwards, at a snail's pace, know as the Aviation Maintenance Zone.

It doesn't seem like a big deal, and is clearly a seller responsibility item, but it needs to be quantified for me to close... Too much variability in potential costs for it to make sense to be able to agree a figure. The plane is in great shape, engines and systems are making book numbers, I am very happy with everything I've learned about it, the seller wants to sell, I want to buy... We just need one thing to be sorted out.
The shop has been very efficient and on time with their process, I'm overall very happy, this was an unexpected item which requires some additional work over a bad time of year.

I am facing some of the same issues, delays!

I keep thinking about having patience!! Right!!! It's time to put it in the hangar.

And the tax stuff will now be put off until 2016.

Patrick we definitely need to compare notes in CMA when everything come together.

I'm sure it will get sorted soon. I can see the end of my maintenance now too, finally.

If you'd let my old bird soil the tarmac next to your newer ones, we should all meet up at the Waypoint Cafe at CMA when we have our birds! :bud:

Steve, sounds like a good plan. Would be great to compare notes.
It will be cool to have a couple these birds over at CMA
