Thanks tom for the insurance leads.

Most of these planes are currently getting parted out for their motors if they have any time left of them. I want to catch the tail end of this era, get some experience and then get what i really want in 5 years, a Phenom!

I recently moved to a 501 from the 58P. My longer trips over the Rockies were too much work in the Baron. Years ago I flew a 500 and I also used Walt Bradshaw for the recurrent. He is good in the airplane. I wanted the 501 to avoid the training exemption costs. I am still in the RVSM approval process and so far while flying at FL 280 I am averaging 165 gallons per hour. I have flight data from another operator and he consistently shows that the airplane likes FL 350 and at that altitude burns 450 lbs. per side with true airspeeds between 348-360 knots. They are a great handling airplane. Common ref speeds are 102 knots. The only complaint that I can see is that they are short legged. At three hours you need to be looking for a runway. Insurance full coverage for mine was 4500.00 per year.

That's awesome, thanks for the report.

Can someone who flies a non-RVSM jet answer the question. In the boonies will controllers clear you above RVSM altitudes in a non-RVSM plane? I'm not expecting this treatment cruising through NYC airspace, I'm talking places like over the gulf, Texas, NC, stuff like that?

Unlikely. First non-RVSM altitude is FL430 and I believe a Citation 500 max altitude is FL410 and it will struggle to get up there in many flight conditions.

If you get a non-RVSM Citation plan to be bumping around in the weather with the turboprops at FL280 and below. Plan your range accordingly.

Steven thank you.

Did i read it right i would need 500 hours turbine to fly it single pilot?

Mike

Yup. Typical single pilot wavier requirements are:

Pilot Requirements:

1st or 2nd class Medical

Have ATP or Commercial certificate

CE-500 type rating

At least 1000 hours total time

50 hours of night flight

75 hours instrument (40 actual)

500 hours as PIC or SIC in turbine powered airplanes

It's very unlikely. I have been cleared into RVSM airspace in a non-RVSM aircraft a couple times, but it required prior arrangements once and being very convincing the other.

I know 4 guys who are SP and didn't meet those requirements. Did it in the plane, got 100 hours with a mentor after and attend recurrent.

What's the story there? If you wanna pay to play- it just works or what?

Read back in the thread. If the plane came from the factory as a 501 or 551 it's a FAR 23 airplane that doesn't require anything but a CE 500 type rating. No additional training. If you buy a 500 or 550 you will need the exemption. It's the reason a 501 or 551 is worth more than it's respective 500 or 550. There are minimal, sometimes no differences in the planes. You can be a private, multi, instrument and fly a 501 single pilot with just a type rating, no single pilot training. Insurance is tuff, but I've trained plenty of these pilots in the last 10 years.

4 guys SP in what specific aircraft?

This thread is discussing the Citation 500. That what your friends are flying?

Early model Citations were not certfied for SP and need pilot exemptions.

Well turns out this 500 is a pumpkin with lots of fuel leaks and other fun problems. Not worth any more than the motors. Deal dead! Probably for the best. Mike

501/551

501/551 is SP certified with just a type rating. Different situation then 500/550 which was certified for 2 crew only.
