30 years ago, I flew with my Labrador in a Super Cup. She would jump over the back seat and into the baggage compartment. She would stay during flight. But she could also ride on the back of a Honda Trail 90. I would not trust my current dog (vizsla) in the back of a Cub. I took the rear stick out of the Super Cub many times for back seat comfort. I never take it out of our current Legend Cub. If it is easy to pull out in the Husky, I would pull it with the dog in back. One less thing that can kill you.

I've flown quite a few animal rescues in the Bonanza. I try to use a crate when I can but sometimes I'll let a small dog ride shotgun in the copilot's seat. With larger dogs, I secure their leash so they can move around a bit but can't climb up front. I forgot to do that once with a husky. She just wanted to get up front. Her first attempt was trying to go between the front seats. Next try, squeezing herself between my head and the left side of the plane. She got two legs and nose in there. It was a bit of wrestling match to get her safely tethered. That was the last time I forgot to secure a large dog. Labs are always easy (but I still secure them). After a two hour flight, they are your best friends and don't want to leave you. Simply amazing companions.

I think it was Jim Wark on the old Husky list that told a story about dropping a pen or tool inflight and it went straight into the hole. Can't remember how the story ended, but Jim was able to pass on the lesson learned. Jim was an award-winning photographer and traveled all over the country in his Husky. He produced several coffee table books. The one I have is "America Flying High." Awesome photos. RIP, Jim.

But it can be highly beneficial to your flying.
There are two THREE things one can do that will have a tremendous impact on your basic flying skills. Tailwheel and Formation flying AND AEROBATICS.
Developing the precision flying skills, concentration, and discipline, required by these activities will have a profound on all aspects of a pilots flying. VFR or IFR.

After about 500 Husky hours and a couple training sessions in 170s and 180s I thought I knew how to fly tailwheel. Then I bough an Acrosport. Oh my . Some basic aerobatics - no problem - flys like dream. But crossing the threshold indicating 95 with a face full of yellow was a new experience. Not a lot of forgiveness margin, but that’s where learning precision comes from.

Jim I fly with my Border Collie all the time. If it’s just he and I, I pull the seat and the rear stick. Load bags first, tie the front ones down with the lap belt to keep load shifting froward, then the dog bed goes on top. He loves to look out since we usually fly low.

The Husky drawing on the tail, and your dog both have that look of quiet contemplation. Liked the Border Collie, too.
