Deeper dive reminded me that there's no easy way to throw in a Garmin log file in Virb Edit

This exists, but $150: https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/aviation-instruments-for-video

This has a built-in microphone and records audio. It's made by a Korean manufacturer or dash cams since, IIRC, 1999.

Think it would work?

Pretty much all dash cams record audio from a built in microphone. The key is to find one that records audio from an external input so you can get headset audio tapped into the video.

If all you want is the ambient audio the dash cam picks up from the internal microphone, then the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 is a lot cheaper, but 2K video. You can find lots of 4K dash cams for cheaper.

I have one of these:

https://www.gitup.com/cameras/88-130-gi ... amera.html

4K video. It has been very reliable (more so than my Garmin Virb Ultra 30). It had an external microphone option at one time, but I can't find that any more. It can be operated in dash cam mode and take 512 GB micro SDcard.

Basically, I'd like a simple 4K dash cam with external audio input. Seems to be rare to find this.

Yes. I see a lot of what could be audio jacks on the side, maybe it has external audio input?

Seems pricey, though.

Just starting this process as well. I am running a VIRB360 and have had success with a bluetooth connection to my Bose headset for audio. The ability to rotate the image with a mouse has been fun to play with, as the 360 is attached to the front windshield with a suction cup ram mount.

I have another mount on the rear step of the Baron for a VIRB ultra.

I am working on a mount for an additional VIRB above and behind the front row, and I can get decent images and read the numbers.

Have fun!

The external jacks are not for audio. From the manufacturer......

"Unfortunately, external microphones cannot be plugged to these dashcams as it doesn't have a port for this specific preference.

The dashcam ports are usually limited to the power port, rear port or sometimes if there are accessories like radar module or LTE module."

Then there are lots of cheaper/better cameras if you don't get external audio.

The thing I am still looking for is 4K dash camera (or action camera with dash cam mode) which has the ability to use external audio. Seems to be some difficulty with this.

I have been looking at motorcycle "dash" camera setups like this:

https://www.vantrue.com/products/f1

$400 for two waterproof cameras at 4K. Could be useful for some out of cabin use, too. Also has GPS tracking of some sort.

Alas, no external audio. Maybe that's on the remote control thingy and I could tap into it?

Otherwise, looks like a solid product.

For what it is worth, the new GoPro 12 Black will now connect to Bluetooth audio (in and out) so I'm hoping that will work with my PMD450B audio panel for audio in to the camera. And it has a tripod mount for more mounting options. I think I'll give that one a try when it becomes available.

Mike, have you tried overlaying garmin data over the videos? the Virb movie editor can show telemetry

Yes, I have tried that a few times.

Example shot on my Virb Ultra 30 showing a ground track, attitude, and speed (GPS):

I don't find it particularly compelling. One issue is that the attitude sensor doesn't seem to get level right (as you can see in the above video). It also sometimes does weird things with the data, watch the altitude readout on this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd4pKNT4dkU&t=200s

Another is that the camera has to have good GPS visibility, and on my Citation, near the cabin roof under the metal skin isn't that. I've never really looked at the GSP data from the Citation for that reason.

Another factor is that it is kind of time consuming to edit the videos and place the data on screen. The data isn't all that useful to me for my purposes now, providing evidence for issues to help resolve things is mostly just visual.

A further thing is that my Garmin TXi panels log data so I can look at them to see what my parameters of flight were. The logged data is more detailed, but with less time resolution (1 Hz, wish Garmin would allow a faster log rate, say 5 Hz).

Anyway, the data logging capability of the Garmin camera hasn't been compelling for me. Might be more so for others.

Mike C.

Cloudahoy will import Garmin log files, can sync the log to your video, and will overlay instruments on the video. It looks like it works by pointing the tool at your video in YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ5d-U-fw5E&t=73s

I have been impressed with CloudAhoy using the Garmin log files vs. their native CloudAhoy recording of the GPS data. With the log files, it knows IAS, TAS, HDG, pitch, roll, lateral and vertical Gs, etc., rather than just inferring those things based on GPS location and forecasted winds. Using the log files, it will tell me now just when I touched down, but mains vs. nose wheel touchdown. I'm not sure what it would do with EIS data.

I assumed as much, but the microphone is on the wired remote control pendant, which means it is wired through the cable that feeds the remote control. An enterprising person could tap that signal and feed in something else besides the microphone.

The motorcycle dash cam setups seems interesting due to small size cameras and compact setup. At $400, that's the price of one Go Pro, you get two cameras.

The new Lightspeed Delta Zulu will record audio to a .wav file on an iPhone. Putting it on the video isn’t hard in iMovie. Dan Millican, of “Taking Off,” uses the DZ sound for most (all?) of his cockpit audio these days.

And where is Martin Pauly in this conversation?

Also has 10-bit color, so way better quality.

i think the viofo 139 and another model have external audio inputs. They look to be standard audio. I havent purchased the unit, but have seriously thought about it since it looks decent 4k/2k/2k for the 3 cameras. The remote cameras seem to be fairly small.
