Beautiful scenery and an impressive display of skill.

But if thats the kind of flying you like, why not just buy a helicopter? It’s better suited for the task and much safer for such operations. I would hate to explain a mishap in the 182 to the insurance claims adjuster or worse, the FAA. Especially after posting videos like this one.

Using a 182 instead of a helicopter for that kind of flying seems like trying to drive a nail with a screwdriver. Impressive but why?

Why? Really?

A helicopter, in this instance, would be about the destination.

This is about the flying, not the destination.

Landing there in a helicopter would be, on its face, not impressive.

......and that’s the point here.

Enjoyed the video. At time 1:03 in the video you make what appears to be a fairly aggressive skidded left turn to follow the river bend to the left. I watched it several times and am not sure if it is the perspective from the drone making the turn look skidded or if it is on purpose to ensure you followed the river bend and not end up in the trees. Low altitude, low airspeed, skidded turns. Hmmm.... Hope it's just the camera angle...

Jim Tweto did something similar in one of the episodes of Flying Wild Alaska.

I start with an skidding turn, because its too low and there is a danger to put the wing down, it can catch the water or rocks, and the turn is 90 degrees has to be made.
Plenty of speed though, angle of attack shows lift, stall warning does not goes off during the skidding turn.

You can see the rudder in the start of this video, same gravel bar take off to the other side.

Great videos, Larry. I don't understand the nose wheel thing very well, but must admit that your technique on the flare is impressive.
But two to three inches of water is not much on the macho-meter. How about two to three fathoms?

Regards,

Tom

Wont do it deeper water, nose wheel barely touches the water and its all over.

Tail wheel skiing is not a big deal. More dramatic than it actually is.

Yeah, an absolute snooze after a while. 'Bout as undramatic as an advanced sequence in the box....

3 inches of water is plenty to put you on your back. Seen it on a flooded runway.

Yep, saw it with a buddy and his Cub. In two seconds he went from everything is great to being upside down in a washing machine. Here's a pic my buddy took of an experimental that was about 1 second from being upside down. About two inches of water.

Thanks for that, I guess shallow water can also be dangerous then.

So Larry,
Curious about how much of a beating your prop takes in that environment?
