I have a 182 P with all of the available speed mods and with an IO 520 Texas Skyways conversion to carburetor. It will do 160-165 knots true, BUT that's at about 4000 feet where you can get enough manifold pressure to get 75% power, which also requires a fuel burn of about 17.5 GPH. For me, it's not worth it, nor practical.

Congratulations Tom! Looks like a great 182. When both the buyer and seller are smiling you know it's going to be a great plane.

That is a solid 30kts faster than my 470 Skylane. It was 135kts every time.

Yep our 182Q is a 130knot plane, maybe because of the VG's, but it will get off the ground short. Now just purchased a 310R to make up for speed, thankfully it outran my 210 or I would have been a little upset.

Speeds for Skylanes are all over the map depending on year model, and just as importantly, if not more, rigging. This airframe had no problem getting the book speed of `144 knots before the speed mods and engine upgrade. Cessna made some aerodynamic mods starting with the P model which gave it a 5 knot increase over the N model. Among 520 conversions for the Skylane there are also differences in horse power. Pponk uses the 7.5:1 pistons and the IO 520 uses 8.5:1 pistons resulting in more horse power. Pponk Skylane performance charts show 164 knots at 4000 feet, 23.5 MP 2600 RPM.

N44LU has the O-520 ... not injected. I like that. Who knows what the real hp is. I see a lot of numbers. Fortunately, I have years’ of Matt’s experience, so I know what to expect. It’s actually a 1980 model, it appears.

140KTAS is just fine. Anything more is lagniappe. ;)

Nice looking 182, Tom! My wife insisted on a 182, so I understand where you are coming from. Just great all-around airplanes, especially with that engine. And those seats look awesome.

Tom,
If you have not been to Boerne TX to meet Jack the owner of Texas Skyways, you should make a trip to see him.
He is very enthuastic about his product, and I am sure that you will find him to be informative and interesting.
Enjoy!!

If fugly for sale yet?

Jokes aside this will be a great plane for you. The Q models are rare, and even more rare in a texas skyways converted form. I wish I had your plane. One reason: 28 volt.

As for the texas skyways engines, the o-520 is typically 280HP. The o-550 is 300HP, but flat-rated at 285HP. Literally, they take a sharpie, cross out 300 on the dataplate and write 285hp. To develop 300HP, you exceed Manifold MP red-line and it's illegal per the STC (I suppose they didn't want to test flight control characteristics), but on the plus side when you depart from 3000ft, you get all 285HP. At under 2,000 Ft I am +1 to +2 over max MP redline.

I'm not sure if you can fly the o-520 at 280HP continuous, but who the hell would want to? To get 160kt you'd be burning gas and running the RPM very high. I have no clue what speed mine gets. I've taken the pants off and just don't care, but when flying in formation with other skylanes whom have pants on, I pull away.

However, about two years ago there was a skylane for sale at some las vegas based aircraft place. One of their specimens was a p-ponk and they had a data tables attached to the documents for this aircraft. The swear the guy was a scientist, they had a statistical table of every speed mod they did and the speed gain experienced from each. I wish I saved the file.

As for the tail, if you haven't painted it yet, it might be even easier to just change the L to an E.

Congratulations on the purchase. You'll be extremely happy. Did I ever show you mine Tom?

The IO 520-F is rated at 300 HP for 5 minutes at 2850 RPM, but the Texas Skyways installation limits the RPM to 2700 continuous, which is 285 HP at sea level, standard conditions, per the Continental Engine Operators manual.

But the installation of this engine isn't for speed as much as it's for shorter ground roll, better climb, and better altitude capability. I have the Troll Tune gross weight increase STC for my plane which gives it a 3100 gross weight, giving me a 1320 useful load to make use of the extra horse power.
