I like 182's, but they're not indestructible. They're susceptible to firewall damage with hard and/or flat landings.

I've never seen a firewall damaged on a taildragger. Plenty of ground loop damage though.

Whatever you get, it's all about flying them properly. I doubt that my friend Mike G. will ever wrinkle a firewall. (Hope I didn't jinx him.)

Tracy, What do you see on the 206?

206's tend to take out the engine mount rather than the firewall, because of the way the nosegear attaches, but it doesn't happen very often. It's a more robust system.

Welding in reinforcements as we speak. :D

You make a good point. I'd bet that for every wrinkled firewall on a 182, there's several ground loop repairs on 50 year old taildragger. While I think the firewall issue is a vulnerability, I think it might be a bit overstated. Fly them right and you don't need to worry. There's thousands of them flying out there.

The 206 nose gear is definitely of better design for strength........but you'll spend double to acquire the plane.

When I went looking for a plane for the backcountry, I asked the backcountry legend Ray Arnold and his other charter pilot if I needed a 180 or 185 to fly all those strips in Idaho. I had owned a 140 for a few years and was fairly comfortable with the tail wheel. "Why?" He said. "Save for one or two, They are all improved strips." "Plus, There will also be days when you will be able to fly when the taildragger guys will need to keep them in the hangar".

........would still enjoy owning one. They're purty.
