What would you buy for an old piston twin 50-60s era, engines over tbo, but plane in annual with okay compressions. Nice paint, clean interior, terrible avionics?

That sounds like the most expensive plane you could buy. :D

If you try to maintain it long term, yes.

If you buy a flyable Apache for $25k that you can easily part out for $15k and do so at the first bill over $5k, you'll do fine.

Let me see----if they paid me 10K to take it--would walk away
25K and they throw in a beech jack and a bunch of NOS parts--might think about it

Find an Apache with no-AD props. The props are worth $10-15k and you can generally find a plane for $25k.

I sold my 1961 Aztec with new AD-free Hartzells, slightly above average cosmetics, new glass, 1980's era Narco stack, 3300 TTAF, engines slightly over TBO but running strong with good compressions and low oil consumption, minor old DH, complete logs with current annual inspection and pitot-static & transponder certification for $24,500. That was last December and is a real data point. The airplane sold within 60 days of being on market.

Parts value or the time left on the engines. You could add another "30 percent of retail value" for any avionics, deice or airframe upgrades. If the plane had 50,000 of upgrades you could add 15,000.
High time airframe or damage history, move on there are better options.
This is just the beginning, as more of these planes come on the market, the number of buyers will decline.

And by "terrible avionics" do you mean a perfectly usable dual navcom panel or something that isn't even legal for class C?

Serviceable. Something you can fly ifr. Just old narcos. It would just be a fly for fun plane. I don't have a mission, or real need. I think I should just call salvage yards and see what they would pay, then go from there. Having any twin that is flyable has to be worth 20k right? Someone might want it to build time. I'm not in any need of flight time so it would just be a pleasure bird for me.

John,

What plane are you considering... mfg, year, model?
A flyable twin isn't necessarily worth $20. OHalloran has spoken and he IS in the business and knows his stuff.... you saw what he'd pay.

You "might" get by cheap, if it has had reasonable maintenance and the engines are running fine. The plan for disposal might be salvage at some point in time.

I "might" do that with a good Beechcraft if I could confirm the airworthiness and maintenance, but not in my current mission. I wouldn't do it with any other manufacturer.

I like to fly

I always wanted one

Bought one and kept my A36

I don't care what it costs, but my wife does.

Now I can't retire.

Boss bought a 65 c-182 H.
Low time, 2003 hrs, 175 hrs SMOH Engine and Prop from 1989.
Still had a Narco mk12A, last avionics were 1979, I was 19 then.
No HSI, Nav A Matic 100 AP. Not working.
So Far new fuel bag, fuel sender.
R main wheel was loose. New calipers and discs. Discs weren't install right and flange was warped.
Prop reveal IRAN.
Engine oH due to rust.
New windshield is sitting in box for install after updated, not new, avionics are installed in a new panel.
Will get new headliner and carpet.

I wish he asked 1st

I do all the maintenance on the plane since I'm an A&P. Therefore the cost is just parts. Idk, just thought a twin in annual would be worth something.

It is not always about whether you are upside down or not. For instance I would prefer to have a new interior of my choosing and style than to pay (in the purchase price) for a half life interior not of my own choosing. This is one example. Todd

What plane/year? Makes a difference.

Depends on the mission you want out of it.
If value or ROI isn't the highest priority and it suits your flying then utilization is the highest consideration.
With older A/C your a victim of everyone that has ever worked on it in the past. Beyond being in annual, workmanship of past mechanics seems to be a problem I constantly find.

I am looking at a '56 C310. I don't know many details other than the paint looked okay, the avionics were narcos, and the engines are over TBO.

As much as the time remaining on the engines are worth, plus ebay value of any avionics and gross weight multiplied by commodity aluminum price.

Sad, but true.
