When we get 100k in pledges, I will fly out with a competent evaluator and spend a couple of days looking it over and developing a plan of attack and budget.

Making progress. Come on folks let's do this. 40k pledged so far.
The logical people to help evaluate are the owners of the one flying in Minnesota. Another 10k pledged and I will call them.

Also,

Here is a link to Flying Magazine's review from 1993.

It was here now it's not. The guy musta gotten the boot for being a smart ass. In any event he was not the plane's owner.
Maybe a Jeff can put the details back up for us.

I spoke with Tony Phillippi today. He owns the only two flying Howard 500s, he has inspected the plane and is willing to help us along if we can raise the money. I believe we have enough committment for me to meet one of his mechanics in Phoenix , where the plane lives, and develop a program and budget.
I will go to work on that now

Personally I think y'all been smokin the stuff these ole Lockheeds been haulin.... :D :hide:

I have maybe 20 hours right seat in both Lockheed 18 and a Howard 350, 40 years ago. Nice big comfortable airplanes. Fun to dream.

Here is a site I just lost an hour on, some Lockheed stories.

Yep, it is a long shot. But a similar , albeit far less expensive , project was done on American Airlines DC-3. A few years back. I was in till they based it to far away, or so I thought. However, base does not matter much, as it is much less expensive to go to the plane than bring the plane home.

We can do this.

The Howard 500 is a 100% design by Dee Howard. Looks like a Lockheed, but ain't. It's one of a few dream airplanes to me. Never flew it, or in it.

The 350 is a conversion, however.

My two youngest boys and I were just at our first Oshkosh. We were making a first visit around the vintage area and the grass strip for ultralights. I was over there looking for a few of the BT guys who were parked together with their T-Bones. We were walking along the grass area at the departure end of 18 when a bunch of security guys started forming a big circle and asking us to get back on the road. An airplane I had never seen before pulls in and circles around. I have to say it was one of the highlights of the week. I took a video but screwed that up somehow so no pics. A bunch of people piled out then it took off without shutting down. It was a Howard. AWESOME !!

John,
We will need several crews, perhaps we can get you and Lew Gage and some other big iron tail dragger pilots signed up. We need to round up some sponsors as well. The thing may have to look like a NASCAR Vehicle to raise enough money.
