Just noticed that the SpaceX website specifies the launch location as "Cape Canaveral, Florida, Earth."

I don't know whether that is vision - or hubris.

I don't understand, whats wrong with that?

Agreed. Elon has been very open about wanting to go to Mars.

Are people upset because it says "earth" and not US? If so, I get that... Would certainly prefer "Florida, USA, earth", but if the issue is that they include earth as a reference to wanting launching sites in other planets then big deal...

As to the explosion... That's going to delay their launch plans for a while, and may really delay any potential human launches, but they will recover.

Space is hard.

Three different vehicles, one by a government, and one by a space company that's been around a lot longer than SpaceX, that were trying to get cargo to the ISS have all failed recently... Good reminder that this stuff isn't easy.

Robert

P.S. The recent book about Elon Musk is a very good read. Interesting person.

No, I think they find it curious that the "planet of launch" needs to be defined, as if SpaceX has launch facilities on planets other than Earth.

I respectfully disagree.

I, and I think many others, were offended by the omission of The United States of America.

FWIW, my comment was prompted per Craig's explanation. I am amused that SpaceX decided to specify "Earth" as the launch location. As though that could possibly be ambiguous in any reasonable time frame. But then again, maybe it just reflects Musk's over-the-top vision.

I admire Musk's drive, and hope that SpaceX is wildly successful. Until recently the concept of a reusable rocket seemed like science fiction. If they can get that to work it will transform launch costs.

My only beef with his ventures is that taxpayers chip-in a ~$7k rebate for each Tesla sale, and the bulk of Tesla's profits come from selling artificial "credits" to other automakers. But even there the blame rests on the politicos (and their enabling constituents) that enacted the laws. AFAICT, Musk plays by the rules.

I suddenly feel beamed back into the early days of the shuttle program.

OK, let me rephrase that: "...the concept of a vertically landing reusable rocket seemed like science fiction."

Fishing the shuttle's solid rocket boosters out of the ocean barely made economic sense, and the main tank was obviously always a total loss. SpaceX may not succeed, but they seem to be a lot closer than *I* ever expected when first hearing about their plans.

Well, the shuttle was re-used too. I just dont think that the rocket itself is such a latge budget item in the context of a launch. The large amount of fuel required for the vertical landing is going to eat so much payload that the balance for re-using is negative. Nice engineering project though.
