Can you detail the failure that was discovered?

I'd like to hear more detail as well of what they found when they got in there. Sounded pretty hairy.

Mr. Hangen, you sir are living the dream.

Jason C is my hero.

Funny vignette sitting with my very lucid 86 year old father and 80 year old mother. They watch all my YouTube videos. Mom says "wow, that young lady who had the melt down looked quite young and beautiful". I said, ya it seems that the younger gals think the old guy has it going on!"! Dad says...." J E T...don't kid yourself". Haha. Love ya Dad :bud:

I posted earlier that is was a failed slip clutch. I will try to get some more detail.

How does a failed slip clutch cause the excessive nose down trim, or cause the electric trim to not be able to trim up?

Mike C.

Agreed. Locked up slip clutch just prevents you from overriding the trim servo. There had to have been another failure that prevented the servo from moving.

Ok either I am not being clear or you aren't comprehending. The trim INDICATED it was at its nose down trim limit. I could not manually trim it down further. The AP had a trim down annunicator lit meaning I needed to trim down. But I couldn't. When I released the AP I had to push down to keep it level. So it was giving a false full trim down indication. Sounds like the slip clutch wasn't releasing and hence acting like it was full nose down.

Clearer?

Mark, the trim indication is independent of the trim servo. So something was wrong besides the servo. Maybe the cable slipped too, which probably means it was tensioned wrong

Talked with the mechanic that dealt with the trim issue. Both the electric clutch and the slip clutch were bad. The electric clutch was not releasing. The travel in degrees is supposed to be 15 degrees nose down and 17 degrees nose up. It was actually measures as 5 deg nose down and 25 degree nose up. Hence the takeoff trim range on the trim wheel was not even close to indicating correctly. The slip clutch was supposed to slip at 40 inch lbs but wasn't slipping when the mechanic used his entire body weight.

They replaced both clutches.

The clutches are in the box labeled #10 in this photo.
