I've seen one of those orange hammers have the head break off and become useless when it was used to try and break through the canopy of an inverted DA20 at -20 Celsius. Plastic was too fragile in the cold. Something to think about if you're flying in cold weather...

He ended up using the aluminium control lock to bust through...

Where was the tool located?? It seems to me that the tool properly stowed in the cabin where you can immediately reach it would be cabin temperature which is at least 50-60F. Furthermore, the canopy should be brittle at those temps. I wonder if the tool was damaged in some way prior to the incident?

The diamonds (namely the DA20) have those hammers in the cabin - just in case. Never thought about location though as the DA20s I flew most often had the hammer in the back - just in reaching distance - kind of..

I keep one of each of these in every plane.

Why not? You have a handgun in your plane. He can only have knives in Canada. :D

My son approves. Took him for a ride yesterday. He handled the controls just fine.

Well, the Glasair is in the Avionics Shop and is being gutted. I just added something to the panel today. This safety product is just another reason to own an experimental. Instead of putting in a backup alternator that gives me another alternator to break that costs $3500 to install or some fancy 2nd buss system that adds weight and expense I will simply add one of these little gems for $350.

http://www.tcwtech.com/ibbs_integrated_ ... h_6ah.html

I have electronic ignition on the top plugs and a magneto on the bottom plugs so I am not concerned about backing up the electronic ignition. Instead, this device will be wired to a switch that you turn on before starting the engine. It will power the GTN650 and the G3X. I will have everything I need to continue the flight even if I have a sudden and complete loss of electrical power. The G3X and the GTN both have an "emergency power" input that will be directly wired to this battery.

So, I will have dual screens that have reversionary capability, Dual ADHARS, and an automatic battery backup to power all of them. Lots of redundancy for not much $.

Thanks, but I cannot take credit for any of it. I thank the designer or the plane for an awesome flying machine concept, and the builder for an exceptional build job, the painter for his ability, and Performance One Aviation for their assistance in getting it to me the way I want it. I further thank Garmin for their avionics that will increase my enjoyment and safety. Finally, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to own such an awesome machine that I can enjoy and share with others. I am truly grateful for this!

Todd,

I can't remember for sure, but it seems like these LiFePO batteries need to have specific charging regulation or restriction (so as not to be a fire hazard...). I can't find the info right now. Does this ring any bells?

Not sure, but not too worried about it. If it catches on fire I won't care for too long :D

Todd,
Please order one of these today!
Arlen, you already did, right?
:)

I have a S&W pocket knife with those same features in each of my cars, and in the airplane bag. Pulled a Guy out of a flipped-over card 2 weeks ago with it when the seatbelt wouldn't budge. It's a must have.

Wow, that's awesome. Where was this? Down here in South Florida?

Yep, I-95 SB coming up on Hillsborough.

There was already about 10 people standing around the car rocking it to try and flip it back over with the person still trapped inside. I snuck in to the car cut the belt and he fell on my legs, pulled the guy out and gave him a quick check, left the scene about 5 minutes after I arrived, not even sounds of Police/Fire around yet.

Of course, there were also about 20 other people filming it with their cell phones instead of helping.

A few months ago I had a similar run in with a car fire in a strip Mall. Crowd formed, cell phones in hand.. I put on gloves, ran into a restaurant to grab to fire 2 extinguishers, put it out and left before Fire dept arrived.
