That is pretty cool, but it is only about 30 knots faster than my Bonanza burning a lot more fuel. If I'm going to burn more fuel I want to go real fast. I keep coming back to the red Lancair. It will turn an honest 220 knots on 15 GPH up in the mid teens.

Numbers I saw do not have it burning a lot more fuel, what are you seeing?

You notice he flight plans 220kts on every flight? That's one amazing little personal transporter.

I've been looking at this and they seem very kool, although I'm not an inline person, they seem to have a 240 mph cruise with 350hp radial and they claim 12-14 gal burn rate. I didn't realize that radials were that efficient.

I run 2300 Rpms, wide open throttle, 13.5 GPH and I see from 203 to 207 ktas at the optimum altitude, usually 8 or 9K depending on the barometric pressure.

If I run it at 2500 and let her eat about 14.5 to 15 it will do 210 or better most days....

The legs get short at that fuel flow... 52 gallons total....

It really shines at 17,000 eastbound with some wind, 198 KTAS on 10 GPH....

Lots of baggage space, but the backseat is for small people and the heat in back is marginal, but I fly solo 90+%..

No friends you know......

Is this, or are they the same, a Harmon Rocket?

Are they based upon a VAN's?

Ben,

Using 65% power at 10k (WOT and whatever RPM the radial makes in cruise) you would be using about 235 HP x .38 BSFC = 90lbs per hour or 15 GPH. After doing the calculation I guess that is not a whole bunch of fuel. I would love to ride in one and witness the TAS and fuel burns in person.

I am hearing a whole bunch of claims on the Glasair III and each owner has a different story. 2 of them claim that 210 knots at 7k burning 16 GPH or 220 at 12k burning 15GPH is all it will do. Others are claiming 210 knots on 10GPH and 235 at 15 GPH.

The Legacy owners all report between 220-235 knots depending on altitude with fuel burns ranging from 14-20 again depending on altitude.

Yep, he is bucking 20 knot headwinds at 6k right now and is still turning 200 knots across the ground, so 220 knots appears to be correct. I would be interested to know his fuel burn at that altitude and speed.

Now he's at 8k still doing 200kts and FF predicts a 28kt headwind on that trip at 8k.

I'll see if I can get you in touch with him. My buddy did that video for him.

I would like to talk to him about the Legacy. "Double Red" in CA looks like a nice one. Perfect candidate for a G3X conversion.

Given manufacturing variations, they might all be true.

Actually he should be talking you into buying a Lancair Legacy. :)

I like the Glasair also, but the Legacy just seems more refined; although, it is short on fuel. The Glasair III can have up to 80 gallons in the wing if they flood the area behind the spar. I think with the Legacy you are limited to 64 useable in the wing. I have no desire to install a baggage tank or anything goofy like that.

I would not mind having to make a stop after 3 hours of flying if needed, but non-stop would be preferable. I think realistically you would be 16 GPH in the Legacy block to block at 220 knots. That is 3 hours and conservative IFR reserves.

Either way, I would want the Lycoming and the IO-580 makes sense.

Might be a Duke for sale soon... I will send the wife and one son on the airlines!

I am just getting checked out in my new Radial Rocket. It was built by Jeff Ackland the same person that designed and built the Turbine Legend. I am just getting started but it is pretty awesome. The radial was modified by Barrett precision engines, fuel injection, electronic ignition, different pistons. It was 430 HP on the dyno. It produces 43 inches of manifold pressure on take off. We have only been flying it at low power settings, 23 inches, 2200 RPMs 180 knots burning 12 GPH rich of peak. It stalls at 61 knots with flaps down and 73 knots clean with mostly full fuel and two over 200 lb pilots. I will post some more detailed info when I get to know the plane a little better.

Jimmy

James,

I want to know more about the radial rocket; although, I probably don't want to know the cost. :hide:
