It's estimated that the average wrongful death settlement in the US arising from aviation losses is $5M per person. This is an average that includes the lowest of settlements to the highest of settlements (for folks with high earning potential, dependents, etc...)
Alejandro
Alejandro, Quote me for $5 million then.

Sorry Jason. No offense intended. Jeff just put me over the top with that pik of the tiny horn. You have to admit that was beautiful. Toot this! omg. Im still having hysterics. Maybe were all just a bunch of sick puppies laughing in the face of tragedy? Not enough laughter in the world these days if you ask me. Seriously, your post ended up making my day. What happened in my OWN life 2 years made me wonder if i ever would laugh again.... Thank you...

Post subject: Official NTSB policy. Yelling saves lives. Posted: 17 Mar 2010, 19:16 |

Now I truly HAVE heard it ALL! And this from an NTSB "spokewoman" QUOTE:
Even with oil smeared on the windshield, Schiavo, the former NTSB official, said Smith should have been able to see through a small window on the side of the plane and possibly yell out to anyone below. Still, there may have been little time to try to avoid hitting the jogger, she said.
Ya think???? WTF!!!

Im sure I'll be yelling the next time it happens to me. I might even scream.
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Circa 1955 (?) A mid air over this Pacoima elementary school between an F-89 (?) and a DC-7 Sent the DC7 diving into the playground of an elementary school. A friend of mine was there and saw it all. One of the pilots heads and arm was outside the cockpit window and he seemed to be trying to wave kids away. Others saw it to no avail. 17 died and 70 some odd injured. Wonder what his name was? Can you imagine? Knowing your toast. a Hero.

It's not the pilot who is going to pay big bucks for this accident. It is Continental, Hartzell plus the rest of us in the form of higher cost of engines and props as a result of all the lawsuits that will be filed. Russ

Thanks Alejandro, I think... That's $20M for the plane and say another $5-20M for ground casualties? So, $40M should do it ? --paul

Hopefully none of us on this board ever have to make a decision to like this pilot did and be judged with the contempt I have seen exhibited here. It is so easy to be judgmental from your lofty perches.
No way in hell I am going to try and crash-land a disabled aircraft in 40 degree water when a hard packed surface is available. Had he done that and killed his passenger, you would be squawking that he was and idiot to pass up a perfectly good beach, and the NTSB would be agreeing with you.

OK, so I don't see a drop of oil on the windshield. Was this just BS from the pilot?

Angel, Manslaughter means accidental generally, but still a crime. Also referred to as Murder in the 3rd degree. Lawyer types can be more precise.
