Batteries are actually pretty simple devices. Beyond the basic ones (HD and alkaline), all modern chemistries have one simple goal: more internal surface area. So, it all really comes down to figuring out how to build the smallest possible structures on the inside of the battery. In the last 60 years, we've gotten quite good at building small things (semi-conductor industry), it's solely a matter of applying the same level of R/D to batteries and we'll get there. Tesla is a big buyer that will create a large enough battery market to justify the investments in R/D. Huge capacity batteries are coming and they'll change everything.
