Not a stellar record there, did Cirrus buy back the remaining aircraft / kits? I vaguely remember reading that was being pursued by them a few yrs back.

If you look at the individual accidents, there was no pattern to it. One building error, one untested design change, one during flight-testing with a aft-CG and some just hit the dirt for unknown reasons.

I just read that ICON is having trouble getting its 250 lb gross weight increase they are asking for.
Icon wants it for safety they say, but without it it is not a Legal viable product.
with another 25 or 50 hp and the 250 lb increase it might be a real functional aircraft if it doesn't kill too many people that have much more money than experience and training.

Quote: I just read that ICON is having trouble getting its 250 lb gross weight increase they are asking for. So far it sure seems like there's no way they're going to get it. If the Searey can be a useful light sport aircraft and meet the 1430 lbs limit why can't the Icon? Also that's a really interesting video of the SeaMax surviving the gear down water landing. Seareys don't fare as well, generally tending to flip like a Cessna on amphibious floats with the wheels down, but on the other hand they seem pretty resistant to killing anybody when they do. The twin sliding canopies that the Searey has makes emergency egress pretty easy. That's always given me pause about single canopy seaplane designs like the Icon or worse, the Seawind.

That video was taken only three weeks ago. It is one of two new prototypes. The S-Ray will most likely be produced.

It looks cool but I'd rather have an older well taken care of Cessna 182 with floats for same or less money. No sense dropping over 100k for a seaplane that is slow and limited range.

No sense dropping over 100k for a seaplane that is slow and limited range. The amphib floats for a 182 are 70k before installation. You still need a float-kit on the plane and an upgraded engine to get the whole thing in the air. Make that 230-250k before avionics. Oh, and then try to insure the thing.

Actually my heart is set on a Debonair or Bonanza V-tail once I have my PPL ticket this summer. That is the plane I would buy first. More useful for my mission.

Just read this on AOPA Email update from AirVenture. "The A5 base price has increased from $139,000 to $189,000. The price increase reflects the additional cost of design improvements such as the spin-resistance technology, Hawkins said. He also cited the Rotax 912 iS, which he called a “better engine,” and the addition of a Garmin 796 to the avionics package. Buyers can put down a $2,000 deposit on a production slot during EAA AirVenture; that offer is valid for orders placed at the show or online." Kinda puts a damper on the idea of an A5 for me.
