Yeah, how many years and millions did it take Thielert and then Diamond to produce a viable engine, and how many problems did it have? And that's with a puny 170 hp motor. If these Raptor guys can make a reasonable 300 hp aviation diesel, they won't need the rest of the plane, they could make many millions just selling the engine.

Too bad it ain't gonna happen.

Maybe the EPS folks will have a better chance. There are quite a few aircraft companies banking on their success. Frankly, this Raptor thing seems like a pie in the sky. Physics are just not going to cooperate.

I've flown behind a Subaru powered CH650 and several VW powered airplanes. I think the VW has been proven to be reliable for sure in a single place airplane and possibly in Dave Thatcher's CX-5 which is proving to do a good job in a tandem. Time will tell and I'd love to see someone crack the code for much cheaper/reliable powerplants.

Personally I can't see how they are going to get the numbers they are claiming they can get. However I am rooting for them and see no value doubting them. I hope they do it. Most things are or seem impossible before they become a reality... good for them for trying. I don't plan on being an early adopter because I bet the second gen raptor will be even better than the first! Even if they miss the mark on the numbers if they can make a plane that's 80% as good as they claim for this price it will be a game changer.

I don't think his numbers are that ridiculous. Remember he's giving TAS at 25,000 feet and does say IF their engine can produce the rated power at that altitude. The SR22TN does something like 220 KTAS at 25,000 feet, he's claiming 230.

There's no magic in the aerodynamic design, it's all about whether he can meet the engine performance and fuel consumption goals. I think that's unlikely, but I applaud the effort.

230ktas on 7gph - the max projected speed at FL250 is 300ktas which will be a bigger feat.

The plan for doing this is to use a compound turbo (explained in some of the videos) to create enough boost to maintain HP at altitude. This seems like a reasonable approach but begs the question - why don't other manufacturers already do this?

That said, even if it only goes 250ktas, that would still be pretty sweet.

Maybe they think it's a niche market and capable as this machine may be, it won't sell like hotcakes because the market (light airplane that cruises in the mid-twenties) simply isn't big enough?
:shrug:

I'm just speculating- I don't know either.
