Chris,
When did you get your Multi rating and in which airplane ? "Checking yourself out" in a new-to-me twin is not impossible, I've done it a few times, but I do prefer flying with someone who's been-there-done-that on that aircraft type when it comes to Twins.
I'm a relative noob to twins (maybe 10% of my total flight experience), but I do fly one of the least tolerant of them (MU-2).
Single engine airplanes, different story. I'll check myself out and fly any certified piston single with a nosewheel, within reason, usually for maintenance flight checks/autopilot stuff.

This one happened about 10 days ago. The owner was at the TAS seminar back in May. He was planning to go back the week after the accident to have some work done. The Risk Meter was off the scale on this one.
NTSB Identification: CEN13FA044 14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation Accident occurred Sunday, November 04, 2012 in Stotts City, MO Aircraft: CESSNA 310, registration: N6BS Injuries: 2 Fatal.
I sat next to the owner of this Cessna subject of this report at that seminar. Young lawyer, not much experience with aircraft. Stayed at the same hotel and had breakfast with him each morning. He was trying to learn everything he could but the more he talked about this airplane the more I shook my head. It was a project for a long term restoration vs a cheap twin he could use for his business travel. He wanted a cheap twin. Another pilot sitting behind me at the same seminar also a young serious student. He had traded his Bo for very nice C421 and was there to learn as much as he could about it. He died in it within 30 seconds of take off after the 421 was painted a couple of months after this seminar. I think about these guys often.

I heard about both of these very sad cases Jim. I think I was at the same seminar, but just did not get to meet either of these gentlemen.
Very sad - different circumstances on both accidents, but same common thread. Flights after major renovations or maintenance, short on experience and in one case shocking string of bad decisions (like testing an airplane at night whose prop feathering is acting up, stiff legged, etc., etc.). Post maintenance flights are the most dangerous flights you can make. I usually run through a thorough Post-MX checklist to make sure all systems are go, I'll do it VFR during the day, and with someone that has been fully briefed and is experienced to help (ideally from the shop). An engine, fuel or primary systems squawk post MX is a no-go until it is resolved.
I don't mean to beat up on Chris - he is doing a great thing bringing this Baron back to life, and he's probably heard enough from all of us. But!..... the last thing you want to do in these circumstances is rush. And.... never, ever do a test flight at night!

Just remember you are acquiring experience at a very fast pace!
I did that too and survived but I was counting on luck too much.

Chris, keep us informed with your progress. I retire in a few months and am thinking of a similar project with a Cessna 340, 414, 421.

If there wasn't one, writing this in a public place for all (FAA) to see is even more unbelievable! I just saw this thread refreshed and could not believe my eyes! Chris PM'd last November about that plane. I had no idea he flew it out of there (2600' grass strip). Wow! When I was there in the Summer of 14, I though that plane was junk, never to be flow again. Guess I was way wrong!
