We made an unexpected move from Kansas back to Arizona this summer. Unfortunately, I needed to sell my Baron, which was accomplished with surprising speed thanks to the help of Bob Stephens. So not long after we got to Payson, I started looking around for some new wings. My wife was never the fan of the low wing Beech, and our mission changed now that we lived closer to our cabin in Pagosa Springs. So I was extremely lucky to find this 1974 182P, which had been recently owned by another BT'er. It has the PPonk engine and numerous upgrades. The panel was awesome. It was the first time I had a prepurchase inspection where the mechanic was stymied to find anything really wrong. And it came through annual last month with no dings. While I miss the Baron, 8249G has been a 'worthy' replacement.

Really fine looking 182. P Ponk, MT prop and a panel that looks like it is worth more than my airplane. Handsome boss as well.

Those are the best values out there. It can cruise good and still get into the backwoods.

The 182 was on my short list when I purchased my airplane. My goal was a stone simple aircraft, no swinging gear, no turbo charger or fuel injection system. Wanted a four place aircraft with the biggest engine available to get the ability to fill all seats and get out of most all airports on a hot day.
I think the 182 is a bit more comfortable and quieter and a bit smoother running than my Cherokee 235. The Cessna has a higher resale and I would likely have to had dropped back another decade to get an a/c in my budget. I also had more familiarity with the Cherokee line. The performace numbers are nearly identical, I can live with 135 knots and 1200 useful. Would like to see 150-160 Kts at times other than going down hill but, the cost of ownership for that extra 20 Kts would probably keep me out of the game entirely.
Simple ain't bad, 135 Kts is a lot faster than driving.

The owner before me did that. He planned to put in a mechanical tach (there is just a photo of a tach in the space now), although I have no idea why nor do I understand why he kept the original mechanical MP gauge.

And it has 1,325 lb useful load. Quite the airplane ! I could even get it to run smoothly well LOP and at peak the EGTs were very close to each other. It really is an amazing airplane in so many respects, and I did my best to keep it well maintained. LOPEGTs

Thanks Ken, you did 49G proud during your ownership. I found a thread at CPA about her history and it had quite a pedigree and was well cared for for years. Lucky on my part I found her before Tom!
Returning home from Texas I saw 150kts TAS, so your numbers were spot on.
