Homage to the master. Somehow the above comment reminded me of something funny that happened during the short time I practiced law. I was representing an old masterful black southern preacher; the epitome of dignity and humbleness to all men he encountered. He and his wife were having "difficulties" resulting from him counseling one of the matrons of the church in a fashion not approved of by the wife. It was an uncontested divorce and all that was needed was for the old gentleman to appear, in court, before the judge, and state the reasons for his and his wife's incompatibility. The reverend was duly sworn in by the clerk and I asked him to state to the judge the reasons for the divorce. Showing the respect of Job he began to state the reasons, but in a low bass voice with his head bowed reverently. The judge turned to me and said "Mr. Green, I can't hear your client." I leaned toward the gentleman, patted him on the arm, nodded toward the judge and said, "speak to the judge". Well, he continued with his reverent rendition, all the time looking with bowed head toward the floor. The judge again indicated that he could not hear, I again asked the old man to "speak to the judge". On the third repeat of the admonishment, I raised my voice somewhat and said quite loudly, "Reverend, SPEAK TO THE JUDGE". The old gentleman immediately raised his head high, turned toward the judge, bowed low, straightened up sharply and said in a booming voice "How do you do judge." The judge smiled and said, "Divorce granted". Jgreen
