It never made any sense to me either...they didn't need the planes, and were afraid they might fall into enemy hands, but wanted to save them for later. So, instead of flying them away, or dismantling and hauling them away, someone says: "Let's bury them!". All the effort to dig giant holes, grease up paper or whatever else preservation measures...and later all but fly the planes out of their hole. Sure. Shipping containers; weren't airplanes flown to their bases? Did the company that backed the endeavor gain notoriety through this publicity stunt? I've got to go now. I want to save our airplane for our kids. I'm beginning to smear grease on paper today. However I'll wait until the ground thaws here before I commence digging the hole.

No, aircraft were routinely shipped in containers and assembled in theater, particularly when the aircraft in question didn't have the capability of flying across the Pacific. I don't know about the grease paper for crated aircraft specifically, but it was common to use similar packaging for metal goods.
Still, I'll agree that it seemed a little too far-fetched to be true.

John:
Build a better mouse trap and half the world will show up to tell you why it's not better at all. Just human nature. That's why entrepreneurs who soldier on and succeed despite this phenomenon are to be greatly admired. Many go on to own Bo's, Barons, King Airs and others! Seems a just reward for putting up with the BS. If it were easy everyone would be doing it.
I do love the saying.

This guy needs to get together with Rick Gillispie and Jim Bede. There would be a lot more than 30 metres of B.S. to shovel through.
