That is my next wish-list item in order to ditch the legacy and questionable OEM engine instruments. Since you're having major panel work done with the current bid, why not go ahead and remove the old stuff? I did consider replacing the OEM's. I deferred because I want to see how "everything" works with the C-IV A/P. If it doesn't, work to suit me, it will cost $35,000 to put in a Stec 55X. I'm not knocking "bells and whistles", I like them as well as anyone. It's just that I have some very practical upgrades to address first. Next will be paint and Baby really needs paint! The nice thing is that the right side of the panel, where all the engine gauges are, is basically unaffected by anything I'm doing now. Even the EDM 760 will be placed on the left side, where the radar altimeter was, which will make monitoring really easy. Replacing the OEM's won't be any bigger or lesser job a year from now than it would be "now". Jgreen

Sounds logical enough to me! You now have my full approval to carry on. I do appreciate the updates and decision-making logic... it helps me with my own daydreams of future plane ownership, so please keep them coming. I have always liked the Aerostars and wonder if/when I'll have a mission that calls for owning one. As a frugal Mooney owner the A* design philosophy sure resonates with me.

Scott,
No rational individual can address the upgrade of a twin, or single for that matter, in this economic environment, without taking resale value into account. As my wife said, "be sure the twin you buy is the one you want to keep. You won't be able to sell it." Sad, but true.
No one who has worked for his assets, and is entering the end of his productive years, can spend money without reservations. I'm trying to balance my "last hurrah" with prudence.
On the positive side, the Aerostar is the airplane I should have purchased many years ago. Not trying to start a debate, but its performance is just incredible. Surprisingly, it promises to be a manageable expense. The IO-540 Lycomings (turbo normalized) are about as bullet proof as any aviation engine can be. The 601P is replete with "systems" , turbos, pressurization, A/C, etc. that all require maintenance, but nothing is exotic or unavailable.
Flying up to Nashville yesterday, I was truing over 190 knots on abut 25 gallons. With an engine monitor that would have been 22 gallons as I would have leaned a little more. At altitude, it will give an honest 240 knots at about 36 gallons.
No one looking for a high performance twin should fail to look into the Aerostar. it's not nearly as "transparent" as the Beech products, and it is sort of a "secret" society, but I assure you, it is worth the trouble.
