Spring: 1) remove wheels and skis and install floats. 2) put on trailer behind appropriate pickup truck. 3) start engine. 4) Pickup starts accelerating down runway 5) IAS come alive, power added. 6) fly to lake for summer mooring.
This has been a biannual ritual for a long, long time. It's even been done with Beech 18s. In Florida: Land on lakes, year 'round. Watch for alligators on short final. Have a beer and work on tan, once tied up to the dock.

Now I want to see an A36 take off from water on top a boat. I have a buddy with a 40 foot Formula that will do better than stall speed. I'm thinking as the speed increases the load will become lighter and not drag down the performace of the boat. Light chop, into the wind. I'll try it after you more experienced pilots proove it out.

There is a shop on the field at CYXS that refurbishes DH-2s and puts them on straight floats. Toys for the local lumber and oil barons. They have to dolly launch them there as well. About five years ago I arrived just in time to see one go. At about 40 feet AGL the engine sputtered and it came down on sloped terrain and nosed over. No one hurt, but the story was you can't (or they couldn't) get insurance for such antics. Ouch.

To see beautiful footage of landing a float plane on grass, watch at the 5:40 mark on this demo reel. http://www.sleepingdogtv.com/But, you will not want to fast forward through it. Every second is delicious.

That is one way of doing it but not the only way. Doug dug a ditch on his farm which filled with water. Then he did a bit of an engine update on his cub to slightly improve the take off performance. http://www.dougronan.com/Monster%20Cub.htmMarc Charron
