Those two proposed airplanes have a very different mission capability.

A TBM will go into 500m tarmac runways, and has a long range; something like 1800nm to zero fuel.

I did a flight in one last year
http://www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/tbm850/index.html

I recall the price list included a toilet. Not externally servicable, obviously :)

Peter,

Really neat write up. Thx.

Question, you refer to a "zero fuel" range, what's that? One would thing that is you had zero fuel, the range would be zero.

:) :)

In my terminology, it is the range at which you run out of juice completely.

Obviously it is a bit meaningless in a legal sense, but it gives you a grip on alternate planning where you have to plan with real situations like a 300nm flight to an alternate, not the 100nm figure normally used for high-end aircraft.

I normally plan to fly to destination, then an alternate, and then have 2hrs' fuel (20USG, TB20). But in southern Europe many alternates do not have avgas so if you actually had to take that, you would be stuck there until you got a 200 litre drum shipped there on a truck.

In practice, of course, you would declare a mayday at the alternate and just land - unless there is a burning aircraft wreckage on the runway :)

I do like the TBM850. It's built like a tank; originally for the French military.

Hi Ed,
You mentioned that your friend has had an MU 2 in the past but wants a 700C now. I realize you're exchanging lower aquisition cost for higher operation cost, but is there another reason he doesn't want to go back to an MU 2?

Greg, since we started talking airplanes my friend has never talked about the possibility of getting another MU2. He had a Solitaire and a Marquis but knows MU2 pilots (good ones anyway) are very limited and is not really interested in an older airframe, I guess. For some reason (maybe my not so subtle nudging) he likes the TBM. ;)

Okay, looks we are going to buy the 700C TBM (I like the way that sounds) but believe me it's not WE! Now we need a pilot and are prepared to hire same. Full time job and must be someone that can manage the airplane as well as fly it from point A to B. Would be living in Traverse City or Big Rapids, MI. Any ideas on where to start with this project?

Ed,

Check your PM's...I just sent you a note as I recently sold a TBM 700C2 for someone. Thanks!

Ed: A friend that flies a TCM 700 on the AvSig board made this suggestion:

Best,

Dave

I'd refer him to the TBM owners and pilots group (TBMOPA www.tbmowners.org) for many reasons.

Ed, I know a TBM pilot here in central Wisconsin who said he might be interested.
