I'm replacing Bowtie yokes with Ramshorn on my PA-28-140 project. The shaft on one of the Ramshorns is badly pitted and so I'm swapping a good Bowtie shaft with the pitted one on the Ramshorn. I've managed to separate the Ramshorn from the shaft by drilling the retaining pin and using an ez-out. Question is, does anyone know the pn or correct name for this pin? It's 3/16" dia X 1 7/8" & after installation secured by staking.

Not sure of the size but it is a standard split type roll pin. Can be carefully pressed in with a bench press or a drill press.

I think a roll pin would have served this function just fine, unfortunatly it's a solid steel pin with a close tolerance fit and staked in place..

I had a PA28 and a PA32 and changed the yokes on both of them. They both had roll pins and I put the same type back in

The bowties had tapered pins in them, I do not recall what the ram's horn yokes had since I never had to take those off. It's been about 10 years since I last maintained a Piper.

I remember an AD on the yoke taper pins, but I think that was the other end of the assembly at the universal joint. Make sure you know the issues on that end also

https://www.federalregister.gov/documen ... -airplanes

McFarlane had a little tool for the taper pins

The 1968 bowtie that I have here uses a clevis pin inserted from the bottom and an AN960 washer and cotter pin to secure it behind the center trim plate. It's sounding like Piper used a variety of methods to secure the yoke to the shaft.

I'm familier with that AD, SWMBO owned a flight school with 8 Pipers in the fleet. The McFarlane pin removal tool was a blessing when it came out.

What about using an AN bolt with a lock nut? If you have an AN bolt guide find one that is similar length and diameter to the pin. I would not want to pound a roll pin into a yoke it could damage it.

One would have to drill the top recess all the way through. It could then get counter sinked through.

Thanks for the help on this, I've got a roll pin turning up tomorrow that I'll press into place.
