I would encourage any owner to get more involved in the maintenance of their airplane. It is for the pilot's safety and the safety of the passengers
A few years back, a friend of mine needed an annual on his B55, and I said we could get it done as long as he agreed to an owner assisted annual and came to the hanger everyday and worked. When we do an annual, it is by the Beechcraft checklist and the ABS guides. Including the owner, it took eight 10 hour days to complete the annual. The crew was the A&P IA, an A&P, a A&P in training with a lot of experience, and the owner.
The owner learned a lot about his airplane from the experience. He also said he understood why annuals when done right can be so expensive. In the end, he said he would never do an owner assisted annual again, and pay a shop.
BTW: It was the first time we had done the annual on the airplane, and it was obvious many of the items on the Beechcraft Checklist had not been looked at in a long time.
