An absolutely wonderful engine. Smooth as silk, Trouble free. Parts are a bit of a concern.

How does it compare to the Jacobs L5?

I had a -195 years ago so I have some basis of comparison.
Two questions, how does it compare to the Jake, and the answer is, both are dependable smooth running engines but the Warner is 165 hp and the Jake is 245-300, usually 275, so in a different class. A recent overhauled 275 is an excellent engine. The -245 had a 5 ring piston and those were not very robust. The -275 has a 3-ring piston and it is much dryer.
And Lance, a Jake is not shaky, it just rhymes. It is not a smooth as a 300 Lyc which is so smooth it is often called an electric motor, but the -275 Jake performs better than a 300 Lyc.
The Jake does have a phenomenon that if you lean it aggressively, it will occasionally sneeze. Passengers do not like it. I have never heard an explanation as to why they do that, but I have experienced it.

I have never heard an explanation as to why they do that, but I have experienced it. Amen. I’ve had two Jakes. One on a Waco and now one on the Stearman. I never understood the “Shakey Jake” thing. A very smooth and dependable engine and Pete Jones has the TC and supports them with parts, service etc. About as good as you’ll find for a small to mid sized radial. Picture for effect and happiness.
