History has lots of example of people leaving comfort for an uncertain future in an inhospitable place.
The "Comfortable Normal" people all thought these people were crazy too.... Comfortable normal is boring to adventurous people. To them, adventure makes their lives more worthwhile and they are willing to take the risk to experience it. Flying is an adventure. The first people to land on Mars will be fully aware of the risks.

Remember we only need about one out of a hundred million people to be willing to go on the first mission. I'm convinced there will be no trouble finding them

Throwing concrete boulders 1/2 mile and dust for 6 miles is the mishap.
The lack of adequate FTS is also a serious issue. Indeed, the fact the rocket DIDN'T blow up properly is far more serious than the fact it DID.
Well, there was a distinct possibility that it could've blown up ON the pad. If that happened, there would have been way more rocks and dust and metal flying around. FAA was surely aware of that possibility, and they obviously did not consider it to be a problem, since they cleared it for launch. FTS - yes, that's an issue, it will have to be re-engineered and re-qualified, Elon said as much.

Several scifi books take the tack that once there is interplanetary or interstellar travel, that the best and brightest leave and Earth becomes a backwater.
