Rich have you and your boss seen this old documentary about recovering the Mustangs from the Emu Plains atomic test site?

Should be good planes. Heat treated airframes, but not sure the intense x-ray lithography is approved for non-destructive testing.

There was a B-17 that served as a ground test dummy for 3 test blasts in the 1950s in Nevada. Later was sold for less than $300. Owner fixed it on site and flew it out. It was converted for fire bomber duties until the mid 1980s.
I flew on it when it was with the CF as 909.
Unfortunately now lost in the crash at Bradley.

There is a good story that the Smithsonian had about Soplata and his airplane graveyard and collection:

The P-51 wing, fuselage and engine are done. Fuselage bolted on the wing and being moved to the paint shop.

Governments sold these things off long ago. They’ve been private property 5,6,7 times longer than they were Gov property.
Why would the Gov take away private property?
