Arp 147 consists of a pair of interacting galaxies. The left-most galaxy in this image appears nearly edge-on to our line of sight and features a smooth ring of starlight. The right-most galaxy exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation. I am always astounded seeing photos like this at what the real scale of these "objects" is. The image in and of itself doesn't really give a good sense of that magnitude.

Hi Willis-
Actually, Gene taught me a bit of geology mapping Rainbow Basin in California while at a school located a bit west of NAU. That was where I learned not to be upset by the scorpions found under my sleeping bag in the morning.
