It is a milestone day picking up the Rotax 912ULS (100 hp) which is going into my Onex. I bought if from Leading Edge Air Foils in Lyons, WI about an hour away from where I live. They are a Rotax dealer. Now all I have to do is design and fabricate an engine mount, design the firewall forward--mounting the radiator, oil cooler and oil tank, design and fabricate the cowl, and all the other odds and ends. The Rotax looks like a little work of art. Attachment: Rotax 912uls.jpg

Makes the Titan stroker I was planning for my RV almost seem like a deal I know, there are not many more expensive ways to get 100 hp. On the way home from picking it up I was thinking that I could have bought that Stinson that is for sale on BT for about what this engine cost.

Sweet. I am learning to be a Rotax mechanic Fairly simple stuff. Be sure and keep the carbs sync’d. Mandatory float check every 25 hours. The new floats I bought weigh more than the old ones

Maybe, if the forth?? try works :-) I wouldn’t (I didn’t) get rid of the ones I changed. I have only changed in one carb, was hunting an issue that ended up not being the floats*. Both pairs of my floats were lighter than the brand new pair. Of course that doesn’t mean anything regarding the life/fuel absorption of the new style. I also have the little pieces to do the float check by adding and overflowing the fuel bowls. Luckily both ways are fairly quick and easy. Which Rotax do you have ?
*I had two issues on one carb. 1. The idle mixture screw o-ring was nicked and leaking. The fuel was wicking up and it was tough to find the source. 2. The arms that the floats move to close the seat were out of wack making the float level have to rise higher to close the seat. Had to bend the arm so the floats would close the seat sooner. I need to do the fluid test on that one but all is still well after 20 hours.

I was renewing my CFI today and one of the optional modules was on the Rotax.
Impressive little engine. Runs on MOGAS or AVGAS, dry sump, gear reduction, liquid cooled cylinder heads, electronic ignition and can be had with fuel injection and turbo charger. One gotcha on using 100LL is that it reduces the TBO of the gearbox by about half due to the lead buildup on the clutches. Lead from fuel into the oil then the gearbox uses engine oil for its lubrication. Hard to believe the lead makes it that far to create this issue.

There are always new carbs on ebay too. I think the military takes them off the Predator drone motors when new for some sort of fuel injection system. I've never had much luck with overhauled Rotax carbs; better to spend the $400 on 2 new ones.

The ones I have seen where I get my Rotax parts were about 1000 bucks a pop, each ! That’s cheap !

I think the first rule on the rotax running weird is to replace the plugs, second is replace the carbs
