I am having a pre buy done on a 58 182A. Mechanic sent over these pics today. This is the nose gear attach bracket, it attaches to the belly. Mechanic noted that at some point in the past there must have been a breather line that rubbed up against this bracket and gouged out the metal. The mechanic says he wouldn't sign off an annual on the plane because of this. Does that sound reasonable? Is this a part that is easily found at salvage yards? It seems like it should be. Oh and Cessna wants $7,000 for a new one. Attachment: C1.png Attachment: C2.jpg

I'm not a mechanic but technically speaking I think your IA is correct, but practically speaking the part is probably fine. It's been painted and has probably been flying like that for thousands of hours. Can you find a salvage replacement? That would probably be the least expensive and most risk free way to go. You might find a DER that says it's OK but I would say that is not super likely.

Scott Should not be a big problem to find salvage or NOS somewhere. I am not an AP but no way i would accept that.

That's exactly the thing you want to find on a pre buy and not after buying! I would make the seller fix or at least give you the replacement part, as Byron says the cost could be anywhere on a huge range $500 to $7000 and you want to put the work and risk on the seller rather than trying to guess on a price adjustment.

No to hijack the thread, but I have seen that stuff on Bonanza motor mounts when somebody is not careful about isolating throttle, mixture or prop cables appropriately.
What frustrates me is that kind of chafing damage occurs over many, many hours and is, IMHO, inexcusable.
I agree with the other posters, though, that I would not let that one go.
There are parts available from sources other than OEM and the SELLER should have no problem finding a replacement.
