Big name in Boeing engineering. A Northwesterner.

That's sad news. He was always a hero of mine.

Great guy, always had a good solution at hand. I'll miss him.

"What did you do at work today, honey?"
"I made the decision to put the engines under the wings on the 737."

Remarkable man.

----------------------------------------------------

Working with legendary Boeing designer Jack Steiner on the configuration of the 737, Sutter made the pivotal decision to place the engines beneath the wing “where they belonged” rather than at the tail. Sutter and Steiner each received the then-standard $50 payment for the patent on the “Baby Boeing”—Sutter for the engine placement and Steiner for the decision to make the cabin wide enough for six passengers abreast.

great mention of Joe Sutter's legacy…

Quote:
…..In a 2009 interview with FlightGlobal, the late former Boeing 747 chief engineer, Joe Sutter, cautioned about reliance on computer-assisted design tools in aircraft development. “There should not be an over-emphasis on what computers tell you, because they only tell you what you tell them to tell you,” he said………..

Delaney’s message to an audience of engineers was simple: engineering skills should be relied on more than digital design tools.

“Get up on the board and draw a free-body diagram,” Delaney said. “Tell me the forces and moments on the airplane, and don’t tell me what the FEM said. We’ve got to get back to some of those basics.”

If Sutter was listening to those words four months ago, he must have been pleased. That was the Boeing he knew…….

Mr Sutter's story about the design/build of the 747 has been on TV here a couple of times in the last 3 weeks or so. Great man great story, IIRC it was said that the number of people flown on the 747 over the years would equal 85% of the world population.
