http://www.flyingmag.com/aircraft/pisto ... 0-valkyrieNew airplane was announced proving once again that airplane are fastest and cheapest when they are made out of paper. I want new manufacturers to have success, but I am skeptical of the performance claims. Plus, the numbers are for 25k feet in an unpressurized airframe.

It will get fat and shed performance coming to life.

Almost funny. Five years ago the claim was 245 KTS max cruise: http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?do=m ... 254af1f5afThe whole huge hinged front bubble canopy thing is completely ridiculous. I can't find a single photo or video showing that it has actually flown. These guys left a trail of broken promises in Canada and split to the US. The talk of a production-conforming example produced stretches credibility. -Pascal

Not a chance in hell.

This is really just a glorified Velocity - better looking, I'll grant them that. Velocity will do 250 kts on 310 Hp. But looking on Cobalt web site, one thing that looks weird right away is that it supposedly loses 50kts off the top speed when loaded. It does not make any sense; a Bonanza loses what, 3-4 kts? http://www.cobalt-aircraft.com/valkyrie-x/

The Lancair Evo with a 350HP piston engine claimed to get 242KTAS and could hit 270KTAS in mid 20s. Per a Flying article back around 2010. So it is theoretically possible...

Is there any other aircraft on the market that has this kind of performance penalty for carrying a few extra pounds? If these numbers were true, the speed difference between flying with minimum and full fuel would be enormous. Also, the weight examples are not linear but the performance penalty is. That math does not compute.

Username Protected wrote: That math does not compute. Ah, the beauty of sanity checks. The math is wrong unless there is some other assumption not evident here (like adjusting speed to best efficiency or something like that). For reference (just because I have the POH handy), a 421C speeds up 4 to 6 knots per 1000 pounds weight reduction. Figure a clean single to be about that, maybe a touch more. In other words, light to heavy should be about 10 knots. Mike C.
