The answer, like everything, is 'it depends.' It's very difficult. Experimental amateur built, exhibition, R&D ??

I'm fighting the FAA with an aviation attorney right now to get approval for RVSM operations in a jet warbird. We have a certified business-jet solution and everything in place to prove compliance, but it's an uphill battle and it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Take another example. Let's say you took a non hushkitted G2 or G3 which was already RVSM compliant and wanted to move it into experimental exhibition category to keep flying after the noise ban. Your existing RVSM LOA would become invalid, but it's 'POSSIBLE' that you could apply for and receive a new RVSM approval once the aircraft was issued it's special airworthiness certificates. It seems as though it's very much like getting a concealed carry permit in Los Angeles County. Supposedly the vehicle is there for you to do it, but good luck trying to get one issued....

What are you wanting to do?

Nothing at this time, Theodore. My entrepreneurial brain just wondered if it would be possible to build a homebuilt traveling aircraft that could be RSVMed.

You don't have to be RVSM approved to fly in RVSM airspace. Controllers at their discretion can approve flight there workload permitting. Though I don't know if this is ever practically done.

Not really.

That doesn't look amateur built.

I think in this context, we can be pretty sure "amateur built" is what is meant by "experimental".

Not anymore. You can occasionally get approval for a Negative-RVSM climb through RVSM altitudes to cruise at FL430 and above, but even that has been tougher and tougher to get in recent years. Even when you do get it approved, the terminal areas want you back down at FL280 or below way before you get close.

The good old days are over.
