Ohh rah. Wow!
One day I need to tell you guys how we freed the nuns and children in the Belgian Congo from the "Simba's" using 4 C130's coming in at tree top level in abreast formation. The fierce warriors ran for their lives even before we jumped out the back. Sky blackening indeed. for me it's the sound. To this day, almost 40 years later I still get goose bumps when I hear a C130

Did you make the Stanleyville Jump? I would love to hear that story!!!! I've read a lot about the Simba rebellion
Jay Yes, I did. Lots of stories to tell there. Some not so pleasant. The Simba's were all high on those leaves they chewed. They would charge our advancing line with spears. Slaughter. Belgian Army, 2nd Bat Para-Commando, 16 company, captain, ret.

Username Protected wrote: I will never understand military procurement. If the A-10 is still needed, why not just build new A-10's? It's not like we don't have the designs or couldn't retrofit new avionics at a very reasonable cost. Why must we always build new stuff at the cost of billions when the old stuff works? I wish this happened! We get new (more expensive) stuff that has less capability. The 22 is somewhat of an exception - there are still a few things the Eagle does better, but for the most part the F22 is a step up. (as much as it pains me to say it). The F-35 is a step down for everyone. Unfortunately the procurement system will never be able to leave well enough alone - if they were to make a new A-10, it wouldn't look anything like the current one. I'm sure they'd throw all kinds of extra crap in it and try to find a way to make it stealthy or some such absurdness. The Generals and congress seem to be the ones coming up with what the military "needs" - I don't see a lot of people asking the guys doing the work (pilots, grunts, JTACs, etc) what we need. As long as that continues we'll make stupid decisions like cutting F22 production for the more expensive and less capable 35. And while we're at it lets scrap the B1, KC-10 and A-10. Genius!

A few months ago my son and I were having beers and a bite at the bar ,a young clean cut guy saddled up next to us and we started to talk...he'd been in the Middle East and said one of his jobs had been calling in airstrikes. ...he said the f15 and 16s did ok ...
But when the warthog showed up the job was always done......he was a interesting guy to chat with....he was still active duty... We did buy his burger and beer.....

that's interesting about the conversation with the young man just back from overseas and pertinent to the ongoing debate on the A-10s retention--and that was cool you bought his burger and beer...latest on the A-10 saga--the new Secretary of Defense has stated that he is open minded on whether to keep the A-10 and has also agreed to a meeting with the members of the AF's JTAC Association to receive their input (and of course the JTACs overwhelmingly support retention of the Warthog) ...that's at least a step in the right direction and good to see someone in D.C. and the Pentagon (other than Congress and the Army) listening to the JTACs...of course Hagel before stepping down had been towing the AF Brass' party line--with weak rationale--on dumping the A-10
