That ol' Kelly Johnson sure knew his shtuff... F-104, U2, SR71... Wouldn't have minded getting a ride in this trainer.

As far as the spikes are concerned, they are automatically controlled on a "Mach schedule". They can also be manually controlled.
This is a very good book on the operation of the Blackbird. Highly recommended!
