Some great photos from the Boom Operator! My first military flight was in the back of a KC-135 back in 1985. We were suppose to refuel some F-4 and a B-52 but the Buff didn't make it so I saw two F-111s instead. Fast forward and I sat back with the Booms a few times on trips across the Atlantic/Pacific as the NATOPS reader for my squadrons during crossings. The tanker crews always looked like they had fun - including the HUGE cookouts on Wake Island Speaking on refueling mishaps - - it isn't a -135 - but I always felt sorry for this poor pilot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO0sRWCf9k4I heard he got a new callsign - 'GINSU' out of this

I've been in many similar situations where the tanker was in and out of the clouds continuously, but always able to at least see the outline of the 135 so position and closure could be measured. They flat-out lost sight of the tanker for an extended time, more than enough time to either run up underneath or fly right into him: Q-3 for lack of situational awareness and airmanship!
