Several years ago I was reading a book on Irwin Rommel, (the German WWII field marshal) and it mentioned him flying around in a Fiesler Storch. I looked it up on google. The superstol is conceptually basically a scaled down version of the Storch.

This is the "dead stick takeoff" guy I think. Sounds similar and mentions a highlander

Edit: here's that video

yep same guy
the superstol is basically a highlander with the hydraulic shock gear and aut0matically deploying slats

I agree. But mainly because here in the SE there isn't much land not covered in pine trees

To get the short landing distances he is way behind the power curve and is near stall. He is using the engine at the last moment to arrest his rate of descent and keep from a landing that would certainly cause damage. For much less money you can have a single seat Helicycle that will take off and land at 10k density altitude or have a decent turbo Bell 47 that would work also.

Neat plane, but for $100k it isn't much plane.

Duly noted. I'll start my search for that Helicycle. That makes sense.

I don't think helicycles are permitted at the Cascade grass strip. They scare the sheep.

I give up Tracy.

If you see me wandering aimlessly down the strip, please give me a ride home.

If you could get Andrea a second job, you could have one of these and doll up your A36 for longer trips.

It is good to have a woman support you in a manner you would like to be accustomed to.

Good luck.

Can't take anyone with you in the Helicycle. . and the Bell is certified. .

Here's my requirements list: tandem seating, can burn 92 octane or less, 100MPH with 29" tires or floats, dual doors. I think there's an S7 in my future. . if only just a kit.

The problem with this particular setup, Mike, is that it's SLOW as molasses. Like 80MPH slow. Even for a rotax powered experimental, that's pretty damn slow. And will you truly ever NEED that gear? Why not slap the Roberts STOL gear on it, save the speed (or mount some sweet 29" Airstreaks)

The Rotax engines have come a LONG way since the 2 stroke 58X series.

These new 4 stroke engines are really interesting and have quite the following. Hell, some are even fuel injected at the factory now.

I'm sure there a point to it - I just haven't figured out what it is yet!

Big fan of the rotax 914, i trust it the same as any other piston engine. Powerful, easy to start, light and smooth. Love the 145 degree CHTs too.
