Not too many early Hondas had A/C. It was all dealer-installed back then. Plus A/C wasn't very practical with that small engine.

Sure looks like it has AC to me. You can see it in the pics. It’s on the doors, forward of the arm rests and below the door locks.

The dealer could add an aftermarket under-dash AC that wasn't terribly effective but that was it. You can't buy an Audi in the US without AC today or for the last few decades. Times have changed.

A friend of mine had one of those old Civics. Took a cross country trip in it, no AC and I was afraid the motor was going to explode from the high rpms. I was used to big lumbering V-8s loafing along with bunches of excess power. No idea what the fuel economy was, but I am sure it was a bunch better than the 390 and 440 cubic inch engines I was used to.

The 1st Generation 4 speed Civics and the Hondamatic Civics (2 speed automatic) ran at high revs at highway speeds. The 5 speed was a special model with more standard equipment, different interior, etc. I bought a 4 year old '77 5 speed Civic in my senior year of high school. Quite an upgrade over my 10 year old Honda 600 (2 cylinder 35 hp 4 speed, 10 inch Michelins, weighed 1200 lbs.)

I had a ‘73 Civic 1200 (pre-CVCC), with the “Hondamatic,” which was a 2-speed semi-automatic - you started in low range, then shifted to high range, but no clutch. It was no speedster, but it was less terrible than it sounds. It also had added-on AC, which looked reasonably well integrated, but the air tubes (essentially, scat tubing) were so tortuously routed that the air flow was… marginal. It worked, though, helped on the hot days. Turning that big old York compressor (this was the pre-Sanden days) made the slow car into a glacially slow car. I enjoyed that car reasonably, but it was from the era (we tend to forget this era, but was legit) when Japanese cars were really not very good - but they were *cheap*, and then they got better each year. For example, my car had a stupid hood hinge design that rusted right away (in Texas!), but my sister had a ‘75, same body style but a vastly better hinge for the hood.

My sister had the twin of that car, save in bright yellow. Gift from my dad who figured the bright yellow as a safety factor. Unfortunately she did not understand it did not have a lot of ground clearance and took it swimming once in a large, deep Louisiana pothole. CVCC motors do not like drinking water, totaled the car.
