I'm excited to announce that Gallagher Aviation is now an authorized E-Z Heat reseller. We now stock and carry a variety of E-Z Heat oil sump heating pads for all models of engines. Prices range from $178 to $195 for the dual pad Model 540. These heating pads are a great value, don't draw too much power (they work excellent with SwitcheOn) and are easy to install. What I like about engine block heaters is that they can travel with the airplane not taking up valuable baggage space. I recommend putting a blanket over the cowling for really cold nights and days.

A question James….

Have you heard of anyone using one of these to *Preheat* their Lithium Ion battery prior to start? I’m using one of those batteries in my experimental biplane and the only real negative I’ve seen so far is they don’t like being cold soaked. I’ll be building a cooling plenum around the battery soon bc it is mounted FWF and it get’s pretty toasty in the summer. One of these pads on the outside of the cooling plenum sounds like a win/win.

Hi Robert,

I have not heard anyone using them to heat a lithium ion battery.

James

I am not an expert, but this does sound risky. If I understand correctly, the EZ Heat pads turn off once the oil reaches 110°F. Since oil heats up faster than lithium-ion batteries, a thermal lag could lead to overheating and degradation of the battery cells. I recommend checking your battery’s maximum operating temperature to ensure it’s below 110°F. A safer approach would be to use a temperature-regulated pad that directly measures the battery’s surface temperature.

On a side note, I just received my EZ Heat from James today and can’t wait to try it out!

I wouldn’t be putting it on the battery or doing anything stupid. Sorry for the thread drift, James.
