88" Beech Electric Prop assembly- "0" hours since complete overhaul March of 2023 by Paul at Aero Propellers, Inc. in Hemet, CA. Bought it to have as a spare for my E35 but I just sold the Bonanza and the new owner didn't want to pay extra for the spare prop.

$12,000 or make me an offer.

Hi
My understanding was that these 215 props could not be overhauled any longer b/c the internal bearings where no longer available new per an overhaul. Are these bearings (or other new parts) still available? Or is this considered a "service" and zero hours on the prop since its service?

When I stated "0" time since overhaul, I didn't mean to imply that the prop was "0" time in case that was how you were reading it. It was overhauled by the prop shop- that is what is stated on all the forms. Typically when any accessory is "overhauled" all the parts are checked to see if they conform to service limits, so they don't have to be new. Consumable parts such as seals, etc. are generally replaced with new. The hours on the accessory is "time continued".

Now engine manufacturers can "Rebuild" an engine and make it "0" time, but only the factory has the authority to make it zero time. A rebuilt engine is an overhaul that is done using new limits for parts, not serviceable limits. Anyone can rebuild an engine or accessory this way, but not just anyone can make it zero time.

Probably more info than you wanted to know :)

Not exactly accurate. If a manufacturer lists certain mandatory parts must be replaced during overhaul and they're not then it is considered a repair even though used parts may be within new limits. I'm not sure what parts are considered mandatory to be replaced on the beech electric props but I'd guess bearings probably are. Some overhaul shops can get an FAA approval of their procedures but usually parts replacements follow manufacturers recommendations. If from a CRS prop shop then it I would think it met all requirements in the FAA's eyes to be considered overhauled. If signed off by some random A&P or non prop shop CRS then I would not be sure it met the requirements to be considered overhauled...IMHO

This was done by a certified FAA Repair Station. Just a random A&P cannot overhaul a propeller. I’m not sure what you are alluding to- that I’m calling this an overhaul and it was done in the field by an A&P? As far as your “assumption” that replacing the prop pitch change bearing with a new one is a requirement for an overhaul, several reputable prop shops such as this one, and Stockton Propeller Service for another, that have specialized in these Beech props have been “overhauling” them for years reusing serviceable pitch change bearings. I’m not certain you are even familiar with what these pitch change bearings are like- they are not a standard bearing to be sure. Can you provide any data that this is the case?

On the Beech electric prop the bearings can be inspected and repacked if they meet the specs. The critical part of the bearing are the two ears on the race. They must meet specs to be an overhaul. Some have thinned out over the years and don’t meet the qualifications. The bearings themselves, if they have become loose, can be replaced by larger bearings per a Beech service bulletin. The seals are special and only a few shops have them available.
Aero Propeller in Hemet and Stockton Propeller (might be others) have the parts to overhaul this prop and legally call it an overhaul.

I didn’t mean to spark such a debate, but this is getting to the specifics of my question. It may be a distinction without a difference these days given unavailable replacement bearings. But the point was to know if this was a serviceable repair, with replaced parts and repaired/repacked bearings, or if this extra prop was an overhaul with new bearings back when they may have been available.

I didn’t know that larger bearings could have been used if other components met standards, but that certainly makes it easier to overhaul per the requirements and updated bulletin. I assume there is a prop log entry somewhere for the work that would go with the unit?

Patrick, as I stated in my original item for sale post, this prop was completely overhauled by Aero Propellers, Inc. in Hemet, CA. They are a FAA CRS prop shop. That means they completed an overhaul in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines. I’m not sure how to be more clear about the status of the prop.

If you are interested in purchasing the propeller, I would be glad to send you photos of the yellow tag, work order showing the work performed and service release and prop logbook. If not, then please go badger some other unsuspecting poster of an item for sale. On the other hand, don’t do that as they probably wouldn’t appreciate it either.

Paul rebuilt my prop maybe eight years ago. He has special FAA approval for certain repairs on these props. In my case he hard chromed and then cad plated the adjust bolts to match the bearing. He learned these props from his father. His work is top notch. At 12K$ this is a bargain. Mine was 10K$ and I supplied the prop.

It's the wear within the shell that causes wobbles; balls and cage. That's not altered by the bolts. The spec for a replacement bearing is a start; a known replacement would be gold.

Another issue is wear on the external ramp tangs since they aren't lubricated. To some extent that can be shimmed for a closer fit to the hub, the bearing itself can't be.
