So, what is up with the "sticky surface" on these units when stored for awhile?

The plastic battery/contol box would deteriorate with age and became sticky/gooey to touch on the original ones. Lightspeed supposedly changed the material used to make the boxes to correct this issue. I have sent all my originals back and so far I have not noticed any deterioration on the new boxes in several years of service now.

I have one like that. A thorough cleaning with Stoddard or MEK will remove all the "sticky". This leaves the surface much more shiny than the original matte finish but it works just fine.
