Sold my Bonanza in 2020 but still have a bunch of Beech-specific stuff in the hangar. I've got an unopened jug of TKS fluid, 2.5 gallons and a 55 gallon plastic barrel with about 5 gallons in it. Free to anyone who wants it. pH is 7. Local pick-up preferred.

Hi Fred,

You may not be aware of the issues with expired TKS fluid. Here is the article from ABS. Its likely this fluid has expired and may not represent any value to the group due to issues on our wings. Just a FYI and to others that may not be aware. For planes without the hinge pin and the risk of issues due to different metals the fluid may still be of value.
Nick
Aside from weight and cost, are there not some problems with the fluid causing spar corrosion?

TKS fluid has been linked to wing leading edge piano hinge corrosion, NOT to the spar or the wing structure itself. TKS fluid has an expiration date, and research from the state of Minnesota (in whose Bonanzas this was first observed) suggests the fluid becomes increasingly corrosive after passing its expiration date. So fill the TKS tanks before the icing season, run them dry at the end of the season, and flush the tanks and lines if possible.

ABS worked with FAA when this issue arose (see “Operations: ASF” in the July 2015 ABS Magazine, in the archives at www.bonanza.org). As a result, the FAA published Special Airworthiness Inspection Bulletin (SAIB) CE-15-22 that recommends an inspection procedure for Bonanzas and Barons equipped with wing leading edge deice fluid devices (TKS systems). The SAIB is available at http://tinyurl.com/CE-15-22.

A quick search for "TKS corrosion" in the website Magazine Archives reveals several articles about this issue including these:

Nick you can check the ph level of the fluid. I haven’t seen it change in jugs I bought. But if your using the system the fluid will be cycled regularly any way. Also you want to run it every 30 days even in the “off season”. Although I picked up ice in Nevada in the summer.

I think there’s more to the Minnesota story than was investigated. As in yes they had TKS planes, but did the TKS cause the damage? I still remember cars in Michigan when I was growing up with rusted bottoms that doesn’t seem to be around any more.
