I have bought and sold 5 airplanes 2 houses, 6 sailboats and 4 RVs and never used a broker. I don't have any memories of being tormented by tirekickers. I also have been surprised on occasion in terms of who ended up buying things, that is to say that a person who I thought might be a tirekicker ends up being a buyer.

I also have developed something of a formula for buying. I look for a person who is in love with their boat or airplane or whatever and has maintained and upgraded it with passion and who now is confronted with a life event that requires the sale of the object of their passion. Folks like this are often engineers. The last three sailboat purchases I have made have been from engineers. My current sailboat came with a spreadsheet of everything done to the boat since the seller purchased it new in 1979. I didn't go though all of it but there are thousands of lines in the spreadsheet. He was a engineer retired from AT&T.

Brokers/agents, etc., are a (mostly) necessary evil. Often you have no choice except to deal with them, be it planes, houses, intellectual property, or whatever. Always remember, however, that they get paid selling things they don't own and buying things with money they didn't earn.

[Edited out the demotic, perhaps upon refelection not for the tender-hearted amongst us.]

Anyone who generalizes makes a weak argument. Nobody pays attention to that nonsense as it has no learning value. Using crude language to emphasize just how stupid one can be in a sellers market is a red flag to anyone dealing with this sort of person, broker or not.

I deal with idiots like this every week and feel proud not to let anyone talking this way near an airplane or a client or a website.

How can it be said that they didn't earn the money? The only way they get paid is if they sell what the seller has hired them to sell. Selling the item they've been asked to sell earns them the fee that the seller and broker mutually agreed on. If you never hire one then you don't need to worry about it.

People who have accumulated enough money to buy an airplane must be good at whatever they do for a living. That doesn't mean they are good at everything. Hiring someone who is good at what they do, like selling airplanes or houses or whatever, makes a lot of sense for people who place a high value on their time.

Agreed all brokers are not cut from the same cloth. George Johnson and his guys for instance are true gentlemen and a pleasure to deal with. But the current bubble and attendant higher prices seem to be poisoning a friendly Beech market. One (nameless) literally yelled at me yesterday for asking for logs and basic info without first proving I was "serious".

A broker? When I listed on FB I can’t explain how many “interested” people I got. It was nauseating. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to vet a buyer in tbis market (sad but true) but no yelling

Lol maybe! But who asks for logs unless they're serious? I probably spent fifty eye-glazing hours in the last few months looking at and deciphering logs. No fun. Asking for logs is like making an appointment for a root canal--you only do it if youre serious.
